Job Description
A vacancy has arisen for an Energy Manager to join the Sustainability Team at Great Portland Estates (GPE).
This role reports to the Sustainability and Social Impact Director.
Energy Manager Key Responsibilities:
The EM is responsible for working closely with the Sustainability and Social Impact Director and the rest of the Sustainability team to ensure that energy is purchased, billed, metered, monitored, and managed proactively. The EM is also responsible for ensuring compliance with energy statutes at all Group properties and supporting the business in its net zero carbon ambitions, including reporting requirements.
The EM will ensure that all buildings owned and managed by the Group are supplied by the relevant utilities under appropriate contracts, and that customers bear a fair proportion of these contract costs.
Manage utility contracts
The EM will be the main point of contact with our energy broker for the retendering and billing of energy contracts. The EM will ensure that utilities are provided to each of the Group’s buildings on suitable contracts, benefiting both GPE and our customers with appropriate prices and payment terms. The EM will liaise with the energy broker and Accounts Team to ensure that utilities invoices are paid in accordance with payment terms and allocated to the correct property and charge codes.
The EM will liaise with the energy broker to ensure that utility supplies are cancelled or transferred as appropriate when properties are bought, sold, or when tenants vacate or take occupation. For properties undergoing major refurbishment or redevelopment, the EM will coordinate with Building Surveyors and Project Managers to arrange timely meter and supply removals and ensure new supplies are installed correctly.
The EM is also responsible for ensuring all mains supplies have the relevant ancillary contracts in place for regular maintenance of main meters and access to relevant data flows.
Maintain energy database
Working with the Customer Experience team and the technical services team, the EM will ensure accurate and up-to-date records of utility supplies are maintained, including mains utility supplies and relevant sub-metering systems. The EM will ensure that meter readings are received and checked regularly, with appropriate readings inputted into the GPE energy management system (MRI Energy). Regular monitoring for discrepancies or anomalies should be undertaken, and all relevant supplies will be provided with suitable energy meters for efficient data collection.
The EM is also responsible for ensuring appropriate energy data flows into the energy management system.
Energy recharging
The EM will oversee the recharging of electricity by the Accounts Team for all multi-let buildings where customer consumption occurs ‘downline’ of a main energy meter, ensuring this is actioned at least quarterly. The EM will ensure that appropriate data flows from the sub-metering systems are in place to measure customers' energy use accurately. The EM will liaise with Building Surveyors and Project Managers to ensure that appropriate sub-metering systems are installed in new refurbishment or development projects.
Energy reporting
The EM will ensure that the Group’s energy consumption is measured accurately and reported in accordance with best practice and legislative guidelines. The EM will analyze energy usage data in consultation with Technical Services Managers and Customer Experience Managers to establish trends and identify opportunities for improving energy efficiency. The EM will also identify the potential for installing sub-metering and smart metering systems to enhance energy measurement and reporting quality. The EM will liaise with the Sustainability and Social Impact Director to ensure accurate data is provided for reporting requirements and will be responsible for upgrading existing NHH electricity supplies in accordance with new legislation coming in 2026.
Customer Usage
The EM will provide tenants with usage data directly and through appropriate means, including recommendations for energy saving. The EM will attend various properties’ Environmental Working Group (EWG) meetings to help improve energy efficiency.
Service Charge Budgeting
The EM will oversee the preparation of budgetary figures and explanations for service charge budgets and reconciliations for each property at the relevant month of the year.
Training
The EM will keep abreast of current legislation in the energy arena, which may involve attending courses/seminars as appropriate.
