Main duties of the job
The Theatre Unit at RJAH comprises of 12 Theatres alongside a Recovery undertaking orthopaedic surgery including Revision & Primary Arthroplasty, Upper limb, Lower Limb, Sports Injuries, Spines, Tumour and Paediatrics. We cover a wide spectrum of primarily elective Orthopaedics.
Job responsibilities
1. To ensure safe quality care is provided for patients within the Unit as per Trust and Unit policy.
2. Manage the team as a team leader, participating as an active member of the scrub and circulating team in a designated highly specialist area without supervision.
3. Demonstrate a high level of communication and relationship skills promoting effective liaison throughout the Unit team and with the wider multidisciplinary team.
4. Support the Co-ordinator in the effective management of the unit, including liaising with Recovery about amendments or changes to the list.
5. Organise the multidisciplinary staff allocated to your control on a daily basis.
6. Ensure the Health and Safety of all staff, patients and visitors, reporting all incidents/accidents/near misses to the Co-ordinator as a Team Leader.
7. Maintain an understanding of and adhere to all Trust and Unit policies and procedures.
8. Enhance patient care by ensuring effective assessment of patients’ needs and making complex decisions on surgical emergencies.
9. Deliver personal patient programmes of care and continually assess, evaluate and update them.
10. Communicate sensitively with patients and relatives who may be distressed.
11. Be responsible for repair, maintenance and safe use of equipment.
12. Ensure correct provision of all cumulative parts of prosthesis implantation.
13. Daily liaise with and assist the appropriate clinical specialists in relation to individual patient care.
14. Ensure all Nursing & Midwifery Council, Healthcare Professions Council and Continuing Professional Development requirements are met.
15. Develop the clinical skills of new and newly qualified staff within your area.
16. Ensure Trust policies and procedures are met in relation to personal professional responsibilities.
17. Participate in auditing and implementing necessary changes in the Unit.
18. Act as a link nurse, maintaining a learning environment for colleagues.
19. Communicate efficiently with the multidisciplinary team and other departments within the Trust.
20. Keep your Line Manager informed of changes affecting the delivery of safe high-quality patient care.
21. Promote an environment of openness and support for all staff, patients and visitors.
Person Specification
Qualifications and Training
* Registered Nurse with active NMC registration or ODP with HCPC
* Nursing Degree/Diploma or ODP qualification
* Mentorship or equivalent level of specialist skill
Experience
* Registered Nurse or ODP
* Orthopaedic theatre experience as either scrub nurse or operating department practitioner
Knowledge
* Prepared to update orthopaedic knowledge and undertake further professional education
Other
* Works well under pressure
* Motivated, flexible
* Good team player
* Able to commit to the on-call rota
* Good interpersonal and communication skills
