Job overview
Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust is an integrated organisation providing acute health care services from Torbay Hospital, community health services and adult social care healthcare services for a residential population of 375,000 (and a further 100000 visitors in the holiday season). The annual workload for Clinical Biochemistry is currently 430000 requests, 60% originating from GPs.
Clinical Biochemistry is fully equipped with Roche Cobas 8000s, Cobas 8100 pre-analytical equipment, Sebia capillary electrophoresis and Hba1c analysis.
The Department is also extensively involved with Point of Care (including Roche Inform glucose and Coagucheck meters, Werfen IL5000 blood gas analysers and Nova blood ketone meters). The Department uses the Laboratory Information System Clinisys Winpath.
A position for a Band 5 State Registered Biomedical Scientist within the Department is now available. Following training the successful candidate must be prepared to take part in the Out of Hours rota, for which a shift enhancement is paid.

Main duties of the job
1. Provide specific technical Clinical Biochemical advice to laboratory, medical, nursing and other healthcare professional staff on the appropriateness of Clinical Biochemistry tests, within your own limits.
2. To maintain and operate equipment subject to HCPC and UKAS regulation.
3. Assist in the training of new staff.
4. Rotate across the sections of Biochemistry.
5. Take part in 24/7 shift system.

Qualifications and Training
* State Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
* BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science or equivalent
* Participation in Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
Knowledge and Skills
* Knowledge of computerised Pathology system
* Understanding of manual techniques and automated technology
* Ability to work in team or alone
* Flexible attitude to working and must participate on 24/7 rota
* Proven communication skills
* Experience of H&S, good laboratory practice
* Knows the requirements for laboratory accreditation & is capable of assisting in meeting them
* Ability to work under pressure
* Ability to organise own workload
* Experience with Clinisys Winpath
* Previous experience in an NHS laboratory
Special Experience
* Knowledge and understanding of specialised Clinical Biochemistry analysers
* Knowledge and Understanding of specialised Clinical Biochemistry techniques e.g. protein electrophoresis, HPLC and POCT
* Experience of Roche Modular/Cobas analysers
* Experience of Sebia electrophoresis equipment
* POCT experience e.g. blood gas, glucose monitoring
* Experience of a UKAS accreditation
