Applicants are invited to join our small team of friendly sonographers at Birmingham Children's Hospital. Some knowledge and experience in paediatric ultrasound is required; however, additional specialist paediatric training will be given to the successful candidate.
As a reporting paediatric Sonographer, the successful applicant will be primarily based in the main radiology department at Birmingham Children's Hospital, or in the ultrasound rooms in the out-patient clinic or emergency department.
The aim of this role is to work as an independent reporting Sonographer, performing specialised paediatric ultrasound examinations to a high standard, formulating concise and accurate reports, and communicating results to the appropriate clinician. In this manner, delivering a safe, effective, and efficient service that meets both patient/families/carers, and staff requirements and the Vision of Birmingham Women's and Children's Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Main duties of the job
1. To have specialist knowledge and skills for interpreting, reporting and diagnosing a range of complex patient conditions for paediatric ultrasound examinations undertaken.
2. To use analytical and judgement skills to interpret complex ultrasound imaging, where accuracy is required to differentiate between normal and pathological findings.
3. To provide a diagnostic, authorised report of the clinical findings to clinicians.
4. Prioritise, justify and manage workload as an individual and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
5. Provide theoretical and clinical training for Trainee Sonographers, Specialist Registrars, and Student Radiographers.
6. Be required to work collaboratively with clinical, managerial, and admin colleagues to develop and enhance ultrasound imaging services.
7. Be responsible for own CPD and professional and personal development through personal study, reflection, attendance at MDT meetings and ultrasound education meetings. They will participate and support clinical audit and quality assurance testing, promoting the continuous improvement in service delivery and quality within ultrasound imaging.
8. Follow policies, procedures, and protocols relating to and underpinning the ultrasound service in line with guidance from Royal College of Radiologists and College of Radiographers.
9. Work flexibly to meet the demands of the service and be required to participate in 08:00 - 20:00 service provision including weekends as rostered.

Person Specification
Essential
* BSc Honours Diagnostic Radiography or DCRR
* Masters level Post Graduate Diploma in Medical Ultrasound or equivalent (CASE accredited)
* HCPC Registered
* Knowledge of paediatric ultrasound, underpinned by theory and post graduate experience
* Evidence of personal and professional development
* Teaching and training skills with the ability to adapt training style to the needs of the trainee
* Decisive, using sound judgment in decision making and delivering in a timely and confident manner
* Stamina to concentrate and work for extended periods of time (RSI risks)
* Must be able to work independently and be competent to write a concise and accurate diagnostic ultrasound report
Desirable
* Ability to use and act on own initiative
* High level of work organization, self-motivation, drive for performance and improvement
* PACS, RIS, IEP and IT experience with advanced Microsoft knowledge
* Awareness of clinical governance issues relating to patient care
* Possess knowledge and understanding of the audit process and participation in departmental audit
* Able to communicate US findings to a clinical specialized multidisciplinary team.
* Ability to work under pressure, and escalate significant and unexpected findings when delays may have a negative impact on the patient
