Full Time / 37 Hours Per Week / Fixed Term due to Parental Leave
This is an exciting opportunity for someone who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment to join our finance team.
At the heart of the Council's finances, you'll help secure the long-term financial stability and sustainability of the Council, advising the Council's executive leadership on its strategic financial planning. As the Capital Accountant, your day-to-day activities will include capital accounting, supporting budget monitoring and setting. Your role will be fundamental in the production of the Statement of Accounts and will assist the Senior Accountant, as well as managing the team's accounting technician.
It will be no surprise that you'll be experienced in finance, with a proven track record of providing professional financial advice in local government, including being a qualified accountant. You should also possess excellent leadership skills and behaviours, leading with confidence and integrity.
The team currently consists of a senior accountant and a technician who are involved in a range of significant Council capital projects and work programmes. This role provides specialist financial advice and support to colleagues across the council.
What you'll be doing
You will attend capital project board meetings with colleagues (including Directors) from across the council, providing financial advice and information to enable the achievement of service objectives and decision-making.
You will prepare and monitor capital budgets and reports, prepare relevant financial accounting working papers and journals, liaise with auditors, and resolve queries to enable successful audit outcomes. Completion of grant returns and claims as required.
What you'll need
The successful candidate will use their specialist knowledge in capital to ensure we meet our statutory and management accounting responsibilities. You'll be an experienced, qualified accountant with specific experience in capital. Additionally, you should have previously worked within a large organisation, preferably in a local government setting. You must have an aptitude for understanding and interpreting legislation, along with extensive experience in budgeting and forecasting.
You must be an organised individual who can work under pressure in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to prioritise tasks, your own workload, and that of your direct report to meet set objectives and statutory/local timescales, targets, and deadlines.
You will need a DBS check.
