Material Handler - Steel America Purpose: Steel America, a division of Colonna's Shipyard, is seeking a Material Handler to support operations in Norfolk, VA. This role performs manual and clerical duties related to shipping, receiving, inspecting, storing, issuing, and delivering a variety of materials, equipment, and supplies. Job Description: Counts, weighs, or measures incoming or outgoing items to compare identifying information and variety against bills of lading, invoices, orders, or other records. Examines incoming shipments for damage or shortages and corresponds with shipper to rectify. Able to complete and update material status in Microsoft Excel and manual paperwork or forms required for documentation. Determines method of shipment utilizing knowledge of shipping procedures, routes, and rates. Prepares materials for shipping by weighing, packaging, and stamping. Prepares necessary shipping forms such as bills of lading. Capable to operate material handling equipment such as forklifts, pallet jacks, hand trucks or dollies to move stock or reorganize storage. Qualifications: Must have a Class A CDL. Must have forklift experience. Must be able to obtain certifications such as a Man Aloft Certification, Shipyard Competent Person Certification, or CPR Certification. Must be willing to work 2nd and 3rd shifts, and overtime as needed. Must be able to work effectively with others. Must maintain regular attendance. Must be able to travel as required. Desired Qualifications: Experience performing clerical duties for warehouse, logistics, or materials companies preferred. Experience working in a shipyard or industrial fabrication environment preferred. Experience operating a variety of mobile equipment highly preferred. Security Requirements: Must be a U.S. citizen. Travel Requirements: Minimal Travel; 10% or less. Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 20 lbs. Must be physically agile to perform tasks in naval ships. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces, including enter and moving through manholes. May ride ships at sea for extended periods Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels. Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment. Employee is required to operate trucks, forklifts & man-lifts. While performing the duties of this job, you may frequently be required to stand, walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear. Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist and crawl. Work in extreme temperatures and conditions. At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation Frequent use of respirator. Protective clothing or equipment and face shields or goggles shall be worn when welding, cutting, or working with molten metal.
