The team is committed to sharing best practices in the fields of acquired communication and swallow disorders, providing regular training sessions for doctors, nurses, and healthcare assistants, as well as staff trained to carry out basic dysphagia screening.
Responsibilities include:
1. Providing a specialist service for patients diagnosed with Brain & CNS or other tumor sites affecting communication and/or swallow function.
2. Acting as a resource for AHPs working with Neuro-Oncology patients in the referring catchment area.
3. Providing a specialist service to inpatients at the RSCH with a range of acquired neurological/medical disorders.
4. Managing and prioritizing own specialist caseload, including patients with acquired complex communication/swallowing difficulties or receiving end-of-life care.
5. Providing a holistic, timely, and proactive service to patients with Brain & CNS tumors (including domiciliary visits where appropriate).
6. Continuing with service development and promotion of the Neuro-Oncology and Acute medical services.
7. Providing leadership to the Acute Medicine Speech and Language Therapist team.
8. Providing teaching and training (formal and informal) to colleagues and members of the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT).
9. Monitoring referral guidelines, patient pathways, outcome measures, and best practice initiatives to maximize the patient experience.
