Job overview
Preop assessment for Ophthalmology patients involves preparing them for various surgical procedures including Cataract, Glaucoma, Retinal, Strabismus and other specialty surgeries.
Main duties of the job
1. Using an established electronic assessment tool to ensure safety of patients when they are listed for Ophthalmic surgery under Local Anaesthetic.
2. Using an established electronic assessment tool (OSCAR) to ensure safety of patients when they are listed for Ophthalmic surgery under General Anaesthetic.
3. To act on the outcome of the assessment tool if any results are out of range.
4. To liaise with a group of carers for Ophthalmic Patients including GP, Anaesthetist, Anti-Coagulant services, Ophthalmologists, Theatre team etc. in order to optimise patients' general health before surgical procedure.
5. To participate in the development of the service and the team.

Person specification
Qualifications
* Current NMC Registration.
* CPD Clinical Examination.
* Evidence of professional development.
* Teaching Certificate.
* Nursing degree or working towards a degree.
* Counseling course.
Experience
* Extensive experience of surgical pre-assessment.
* Evidence of up-to-date standards of clinical practice.
* Experience of audit.
* Experience of telephone pre-assessment.
* Experience in care of patients undergoing all forms of surgery.
Skills
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills both verbal and written.
* Able to work without supervision.
* Teaching & assessing experience.
* Competence in venepuncture.
* Competence in Consent for Research.
* Competence in Tissue donation consent.
* Skills in change management and project development.
* Ability to adapt to change within working situations.
