Are you a Mental Health nurse who is passionate about providing excellent care for children and young people?
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 Registered Mental Health Nurse to support and lead the development of pathways and care for children and young people with mental health difficulties at Darent Valley Hospital. We are seeking an enthusiastic, motivated and innovative nurse to join our CYP Service to work as part of our specialist nursing team supporting areas within the hospital where children and young adults may go.
The successful candidate will work across CYP services providing leadership in terms of clinical, specialist and holistic support/advice to children and young people with a variety of mental health problems. The post holder will provide relevant specialist mental health training, supervision and debriefing, and act as the interface between CYP ED, PAU and paediatric and adult wards, and specialist mental health services (including the All Age Eating Disorder Service, Locality CAMHS Services and the Crisis team).
This post will play a key role in leading and supporting staff with the management of patients experiencing mental health difficulties and providing expert clinical knowledge in the management of mental health issues for children and young people and their families.
Main duties of the job
This post is crucial in raising awareness and promoting a wider understanding of Mental Health for CYP, requiring an evidence-based approach to education.
We are looking for you to apply if you are a motivated clinical nurse, with knowledge and experience in children and young people's mental health problems in an acute or primary care setting. You will have excellent interpersonal, IT and communication skills with the ability to organise, manage and plan your own workload effectively. You will be dedicated and passionate in your role working with children and young people whilst demonstrating excellent leadership and team working. You will be energetic and dedicated in working as an advocate in support of our children, young people and their families.
Job responsibilities
1. Work alongside the CAMHS crisis and All Age Eating Disorder Service to assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing provision.
2. Lead the assessment, planning, implementing and evaluating of specialist care, including supporting and evaluating the work of paediatric and agency staff.
3. Provide specialist advice for children, young people and families on the nursing care and management of mental health.
4. Review children and young people in paediatric and adult ED, who require an inpatient bed and ensure appropriate risk assessments are completed.
5. Review policies and procedures in relation to CAMHS and the management of children and young people in the acute setting.
6. Act as an advocate for the children and young people and their family, and where necessary refer to external agencies for identified support.
7. Actively involve children and young people and their families (where appropriate) in decisions about the care and support they receive.
8. Inform children and young people about participation initiatives, and actively support the development of such initiatives.
9. Conduct a daily review of children and young people admitted to inpatient areas, and provide support for all clinical areas in relation to mental health for children and young people.
10. Assess and manage clinical events to ensure safe and effective care.
11. Maintain accurate and complete nursing records.
12. Support best practice in relation to safe custody of controlled drugs under the Misuse of Drugs Act and in accordance with hospital policy and NMC guidelines.

* Degree or equivalent experience
* 998 or equivalent qualification
* CAMHS module or extensive experience

Knowledge and Skills
Essential
* Knowledge of current clinical evidence based practice within the field of CYP Mental Health
* Expert knowledge of the appropriate legislation around Mental Health Act and the legal frameworks within which mental illness can be assessed and treated in CYP
* Proven management and safeguarding experience and knowledge of the Children's Act
* Robust knowledge and understanding of clinical governance
* Knowledge of current professional issues relating to nursing and CYP mental health
* Experience of applying research evidence to clinical practice
