As an orthoptic assistant, you will play a crucial role making a difference in our patients' lives by being a first line of contact for patients or parents as well as other hospital and professional staff.
You will be providing orthoptic administrative duties as well as clinical assessments in vision, colour vision, intraocular pressure, ophthalmic imaging, virtual glaucoma and neuro-ophthalmic clinics.
Being able to work independently and within a team is essential for the role. Some of these clinics are offsite and some Saturday working may be required.

Main duties of the job
To provide the Orthoptic and Ophthalmic Technician Team with administrative support including but not limited to clinic coordination, timetabling and procurement. To be the first point of contact for patient, parent and staff queries. To line manage Band 3 ophthalmic technicians and support both the Head Orthoptist and the Ophthalmic Technician Coordinator with managing staff leave, sickness cover and general service provision. To organise/facilitate meetings/training days including minute taking.
To undertake clinical duties under the direction of registered orthoptists and to take a lead role in the provision of technician-led clinics. To support the training and induction of new staff.
This post will include some Saturday work.

Person specification
Qualifications
* NVQ level III or above in a care related subject or equivalent experience/practical knowledge in a clinical environment or 5 GCSE passes or equivalent at Grade C or above.
* All candidates must have the equivalent of GCSE grade C or above in Maths and English
* Leadership/Supervisory qualification obtained within 6 months from appointment or equivalent demonstrable experience
* IT Qualification
* A Levels in relevant subjects
* Up to date Recruitment and Selection training
Experience
* Significant previous experience of dealing with patients, customers or members of the public
* Demonstrates an ability to work with others to actively solve problems which impact on service delivery
* Previous experience of working in a supervisory role, including teaching and mentoring
* Previous experience in an administrative role.
* Previous experience of visual field testing and the assessment of patients with Thyroid Eye Disease.
* Experience of direct line management.
* Experience of working in an Ophthalmology Out Patient setting
Knowledge
* Good knowledge of patient care
* Understanding of issues relating to confidentiality, health and safety and risk management
* Evidence of Extended learning/Learning beyond basic competency level, with respect to continuing professional development
* Awareness of national priorities and initiatives
* Knowledge of general medical/ophthalmic conditions, equipment and techniques
