Job summary We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist to join our progressive and dynamic Biochemistry team. The candidate must be capable of dealing with the fast pace and high throughput of the department, contributing to the analysis of >5000 samples a day, aided by the state of the art APTIO track and Siemens Atellica. They must also be flexible, able to work across our three laboratory sites: Grange University Hospital, Cwmbran Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport Nevill Hall Hospital, Abergavenny. The successful post-holder will benefit from periodic rotation into our Special Chemistry section, developing their skills in manual techniques such as HPLC, ICP-MS and electrophoresis. We are also the providers of stone analysis for South Wales. As a department, staff development and training is a top priority. The department has full UKAS accreditation and is an approved IBMS training laboratory. There are also plenty of opportunities for CPD, this includes: monthly specialist portfolio seminars Access to PEP connect (via Siemens partnership) The successful applicant must be HCPC registered, hold an IBMS specialist portfolio, have excellent interpersonal and time-management skills, be committed to service excellence. AFC annex 21 may be considered for any suitably experienced band 5 staff without a specialist portfolio (or logbook). This will need to be completed within a finite maximum of two years from the appointment. Main duties of the job To participate in the day to day operation of the department. Participation in the out of hours service will be an essential requirement, once deemed competent in all relevant areas. The OOH service is provided over 24/7, 365 days with a shift pattern derived through e-roster. To lead on OOH shifts to maintain a quality service and to meet TAT's. To maintain adequate stock of all reagents and consumables, through accurate record keeping and reporting to senior staff. To participate in continuous training to maintain the services within each section and to keep up to date with regard to developments within the discipline To ensure the rapid turnover of work is maintained To ensure the quality control tests are conducted and meet required analytical standards. Technical validation of results and produce reports dependent on discipline. To be aware of all relevant standard operating procedures and to operate according to each procedure paying particular attention to Health and Safety and any other regulations that are appropriate. To undertake routine maintenance of laboratory equipment To use analysers and other laboratory equipment in a safe, efficient and cost effective manner. Communicate and explain complex and sensitive info including results to service users such as hospital clinicians, GPs, wards, and community staff.
