Saxon Crown Swimming Club, based in South London, is seeking a highly motivated, enthusiastic and inspiring, well-qualified Performance Coach to assist our Head Coach in improving the technical skills and performance of young swimmers at this friendly, inclusive and ambitious club.
Job Description
Saxon Crown is Lewisham’s only competitive swimming club providing a platform for swimmers from age 5 through to adulthood, including a thriving Masters squad and a Disabled Swimmers group.
With over 350 swimmers in total, our ambitious club is aiming to progressively increase representation at county, regional and national levels. This particular coaching role is to act as the lead technical coach focused on helping the Head Coach to make that happen amongst our junior swimmers.
You will be responsible to the Head Coach for improving all aspects of swimming technique through the performance of the following key functions:
Specific:
1. Analysing key technical deficiencies of the club’s swimmers on a collective and individual basis.
2. Setting targets for individual swimmers to improve specific techniques.
3. Reviewing improvement in technical performance with the individual swimmer, the parent/guardian (where feasible) and the Head Coach.
4. Reviewing feedback logbooks with the individual swimmers.
5. Planning training sessions (drills) geared to improving technique and delivering those sessions to groups, and individuals on a one-to-one basis, to meet their particular needs.
6. Providing training sessions for other members of the coaching team as required by the Head Coach, passing on your knowledge and expertise.
7. Preparing swimmers for competition.
8. Attendance at gala competitions as required by the Head Coach; giving pre-race advice to swimmers; observing performance; providing post-analysis briefing; and preparing brief improvement plans to be shared with the swimmer, the parent/guardian (if feasible) and the particular Squad Coach.
9. Developing and agreeing with the Head Coach, the road maps to improving performance, following the reviews carried out after each key competition.
10. Liaise with the Land Training Coach to plan and ensure that the land training programme meets squad and individual requirements.
General:
1. Promote the welfare of your swimmers.
2. Maintain effective, professional relationships with the Head Coach, colleagues, swimmers, parents and pool staff.
3. Keep coaching, DBS and safeguarding certification up to date.
4. Motivate swimmers to perform at their best through inspiring coaching.
5. Maintain a register of attendance.
6. Keep abreast of the latest innovations in coaching techniques.
7. Attendance at league competitions as required by the Head Coach.
8. Assist the Head Coach, as required, with administrative duties such as timetabling and coaching cover.
9. Provide coaching cover as reasonably required.
10. Act as a coach mentor for less experienced coaches.
Working Hours: A minimum of 20 hours per week and could be full-time for the right candidate.
Person Specification:
1. Swim England Swimming Coach Certificate/ASA Level 2 Coaching Award (or equivalent).
2. Experience that displays successful technical proficiency as a coach.
3. Evidence of ability to coach effectively and relate to young swimmers of all ages.
4. Evidence of ability to put together effective training plans.
5. Motivational skills.
6. Organisational skills.
7. Reasonable administrative skills.
8. Able to work unsociable hours.
9. Calmness under pressure.
10. Good team player.
