We are looking to recruit a Critical Care Technician to join our team managing and maintaining medical equipment and technology across our critical care units at Queen's and King George Hospitals at Barking Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust. You will be pivotal to our ability to provide safe care to patients, by providing expert guidance and support for staff at the bedside, as well as ensuring that equipment is available and in good condition. You must have experience working in a critical care environment, and you must have experience working with medical devices in depth (as a technologist, engineer, nurse or allied health professional). You should have a Bachelors degree in a relevant clinical, scientific or technical subject, or equivalent experience. You will be expected to work closely with other teams within the Department of Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering, such as workshop engineers and imaging physicists. You must be self-motivated, confident working alone, but willing to contribute as part of the team. We are looking for someone who will be a proactive, friendly presence on our intensive care units. A flexible approach, excellent communication skills and computer literacy are essential. Training will be provided, but you must be prepared to attend local training as well as external training courses where relevant. The role of the critical care technician is to provide technical support and expertise to support the clinical application of a wide range of complex and critical medical devices. The majority of this work consists of providing advice to clinical colleagues, troubleshooting technology at the bedside, delivering formal and informal training, and carrying out technical and administrative work. Your duties would include, but are not limited to: advising clinical staff on the care and effective use of medical equipment; troubleshooting problems at the bedside; assisting with the development of protocols; maintaining equipment records; repairing and carrying out planned maintenance on equipment; evaluating new devices; and supporting the setup of medical equipment on patients. Please refer to the job description for a complete list of duties. We’re an organisation that is getting better and better. We were the most improved Trust in England for A&E performance in 2023/24; we’re no longer in special measures; and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, has been named the top CEO by the Health Service Journal. Our improvements are driven by a determination to deliver care we’re proud of and that our patients are happy with. Many of our 8,000 staff – who come from 146 different countries - live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and the majority are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. More than 400 of them are on apprenticeship programmes and we’re proud to be a London Living Wage employer. We operate from two main sites - King George Hospital (KGH) in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London – more than 300,000 people visited our A&Es in 2023. Patients across north east London are benefitting from two new state of the art theatres at KGH and our Community Diagnostic Centres at Barking Community Hospital and St George’s Health and Wellbeing Hub will significantly increase the number of scans that can be carried out. We’re looking forward to introducing an electronic patient record next year. This will mean the records of any patient visiting one of the seven hospitals run by BHRUT and Barts Health will be accessible to the clinical teams. It’ll make things easier for staff and will be better for patients.
