We are seeking a self-motivated, enthusiastic and experienced Tree Arborist to join the Arboriculture team in PCC’s Street Services department. The team has the responsibility to promote, manage and enhance Plymouth City Council’s tree estate in a manner that delivers maximum benefits for people and nature. The post will be part of the Plan for Trees Investment Programme, ensuring that the value and condition of the urban forest is maintained and enhanced for the city.
Key duties will include:
1. Promote and develop a high standard of arboriculture practices across the city, covering all aspects of tree surgery, ensuring that all safety and legal regulations concerning high risk practices and the use of specialist equipment are met, safeguarding the public in high-risk areas. Dismantling large trees and working in confined areas.
2. Carry out grounds maintenance as directed ensuring compliance with relevant safe working procedures and codes of practice.
3. Ensure that all safety and legal regulations concerning high risk practices and the use of specialist equipment are met.
4. Making decisions involving the use of initiative. Some problems are referred to supervisor/manager.
5. Inspect and maintain all equipment (e.g. ropes, harnesses, strops etc) daily; record all equipment checks and forward to line manager.
6. Responsible for the safe operation of ground equipment.
7. Highway Code regulations are complied with.
8. No reportable accidents within the workplace.
9. Completion of tasks and duties within set departmental timescale.
10. Completion of tasks and duties in compliance with environmental legislation and British Standards.
11. Fell or dismantle all types of trees using felling levers, wedges, ropes, pulleys, winches, tractor, IPAF.
12. Clear leaning, hung up, damaged and windblown trees.
This person will need to be/have:
1. An excellent communicator to be able to confidently liaise with Councillors, residents and contractors.
2. Able to work independently and as part of a team with the confidence to evaluate situations and make clear decisions in line with relevant legislation and local policy.
3. A strong knowledge of trees.
4. Organised and self-motivated.
5. Basic knowledge of IT systems.
6. Experience of working with a diverse range of people/customers/contractors and dealing with sometimes challenging situations.
7. You will be able to play your part in continuing the development of our team and partnerships.
8. Have or be working towards a full driving licence including CPC relevant driving category (LGV).
9. Knowledge of road traffic legislation.
10. Relevant qualifications for use of chainsaws.
11. Relevant tree climbing and aerial rescue qualifications.
