An opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Specialist Nurse within the Specialty of Rheumatology.
Based in the out-patient department Sunderland Royal, the Rheumatology unit can be exceptionally busy, with clinics held every day. This post may require cross-site and off-site working to meet service demands.
We are looking for a Rheumatology Specialist Nurse who is caring and can cope with a demanding job to join the existing team of dedicated professionals within the unit.
We comprise a team of 7 consultants, 5 specialist nurses, 6 HCAs, 2 specialist physiotherapists, 1 specialist pharmacist, and a specialist occupational therapist.
Main Duties of the Job
Rheumatology is an advancing specialty; there have been major developments in treating rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis in recent years. This has led to an increase in service demand.
The role will support the current Rheumatology Nurse Specialist team to provide patient education and support, drug monitoring, advice line support, and patient assessment.
You will be supported in utilizing your existing skills whilst developing the skills and competencies required to work within rheumatology to offer safe, quality experiences to patients. Using the RCN rheumatology nurse framework, the candidate will ensure that each aspect of this framework is acknowledged.
Rheumatology is a research-active department and is involved in undertaking research to improve patient care. Nurse-led clinics will be a major part of the new candidate's role once the training period is successful, and ensuring patient satisfaction is key; therefore, good communication and listening skills are essential.

Job Responsibilities
A specialist nurse is defined as a qualified nurse whose primary role is to provide care, guidance, and support based on an advanced level of knowledge to patients, carers, and health professionals concerning a specific disease/condition.
The specialist nurse will:
1. Work as part of the multidisciplinary team under the direction of the line manager/Matron.
2. Continue to develop advanced knowledge and skills within the specialist sphere of practice.
3. Support the planning, delivery, and evaluation of care pathways for a designated group of patients under the direction of the line manager/Matron.
4. Support the development of nursing practice within the specialist field through the use of evidence-based practice and in line with agreed national standards, and contribute to the body of nursing knowledge.
5. Work as an autonomous practitioner within their sphere of practice.
6. Continuously improve clinical standards in line with the clinical governance framework.
7. Exercise accountability as set out in the NMC Code.
8. Contribute to training and education within the specialist area.
9. Provide specialist clinical advice and support to patients and clinical staff within the Trust on the management and care of patients within the specialist area.
10. Provide direct access for patients, either face-to-face or via telephone consultation.
11. Represent the service nationwide in the absence of the line manager/Matron.
12. Play a key role in ensuring that national and local standards/targets for the specialist area are met.
13. Manage and lead nurse-led clinics in relation to reviewing patients and play a key role in optimizing complex treatment regimes, facilitating hospital discharge, and preventing avoidable hospital admissions.
14. Support and undertake research relevant to the needs of the specialist practice.

* Clinical skills accreditation or willingness to complete within 12 months of starting in post.
