About Awaken Genius
Awaken Genius is a therapeutic intervention programme designed for primarily vulnerable Black children and families, focusing on easing the transition to secondary school. Led by a distinguished team of educationists, neuroscientists, psychotherapists, and community partners, our programme integrates Ubuntu philosophy and art modalities to address academic, emotional, and social challenges stemming from adverse childhood experiences.
We are passionate about reducing school exclusions, fostering academic excellence, and improving mental well-being among children aged 8–11.
Role Overview
We are seeking freelance curriculum writers to join our creative team and co-develop a curriculum rooted in our holistic and culturally responsive philosophy. You will collaborate with educators, psychotherapists, drama therapists, and other specialists to create innovative and engaging lesson plans. The curriculum will integrate academic subjects (math and English) with art-based therapies, mindfulness, movement, and Ubuntu philosophy.
Key Responsibilities
• Design curriculum modules and lesson plans tailored to children aged 8–11, incorporating:
• Core academic subjects: Math and English
• Art modalities: Drama therapy, theatre, movement, rhythm, mindfulness, and role play
• Entrepreneurship and self-care practices
• Ubuntu philosophy emphasising interconnectedness and community.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary experts, including educators, neuroscientists, and therapists, to ensure a trauma-informed and culturally relevant approach.
• Develop engaging and inclusive activities that support students’ mental well-being and social-emotional learning.
• Focus on reducing school exclusions through innovative, restorative, and participatory methods.
• Ensure alignment with national curriculum standards while maintaining the unique essence of the Awaken Genius programme.
Qualifications
• Proven experience in curriculum development for primary-aged children, particularly in creative or alternative education settings.
• Familiarity with trauma-informed and culturally responsive teaching practices.
• Passion for holistic education and addressing challenges faced by vulnerable Black children and families.
• Expertise in incorporating art-based therapies, movement, and mindfulness into lesson plans.
• Strong knowledge of Ubuntu philosophy or willingness to learn and integrate it into the curriculum.
• Excellent collaboration and communication skills.
Desirable Skills
• Background in drama therapy, theatre, or creative arts education.
• Experience working with children with adverse childhood experiences or those transitioning to secondary school.
• Familiarity with restorative justice and collaborative learning methods.
• Knowledge of neurodiversity and strategies to support diverse learning needs.
Compensation & Commitment
• Rate: £27.66 per hour.
• Commitment: Flexible hours, remote work with occasional meetings.
