About this Housing Standards Surveyor Job in Canterbury: The role of a Housing Standards Surveyor is key in supporting the work we do at Canterbury City Council to ensure there is good quality, healthy housing for households in the private rented sector accommodation within the district. Offering a varied workload you will be dealing with work streams including: Disabled Facilities Grants; The Licencing of Houses of Multiple Occupation; Caravan Licencing; The delivery of Canterbury City Council’s Social Letting Agency; Responding to reports of disrepair in the private sector; Enforcement of legislation. Working pattern: Full-time, 37 hours per week Flexible, hybrid working arrangements A full week off over Christmas in addition to your annual leave allowance About you, the ideal Housing Standards Surveyor for our team: Your qualifications: Qualified to A-Level standard or equivalent Educated to degree standard would be desirable A recognised HND or equivalent qualification in building/ construction / environmental health; or a minimum of 5 years experience in a similar role HHSRS Qualification Your knowledge: Working knowledge of landlord/tenant issues and private-sector housing legislation. A thorough understanding of the causes and remedies of dampness in buildings. Sound understanding of compliance with statutory landlord obligations and associated legislation in particular the Decent Homes Standard. Understanding of the legal processes covering enforcement work, including PACE, evidence gathering and prosecutions. Knowledge & understanding of the Housing Act 2004 and the Housing Health and Safety Rating System. Knowledge & understanding of the Mandatory HMO Licencing scheme and HMO Management Regulations. Knowledge & understanding of Disabled Facilities Grants, eligibility criteria regarding the applicant & grant eligible works. Your skills: Communicates clearly and effectively to diverse audiences in writing and verbally on a range of topics Influencing and persuading skills Ability to work with a degree of autonomy as well as being an effective team player Ability to change working practices in line with legislative changes Good technical skills Excellent communications skills Your experience: A working background in Private Sector Housing/ Environmental Health or similar preferable, but not essential if you have transferable skills Essential: Due to the nature of the role, an enhanced DBS check will be required You need to have your own car and a full driving licence for this post
