What You’ll Be Doing
Our number one priority at National Highways is - and always will be - safety.
As an apprentice Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Technician, you’ll help make sure everyone who uses and works on our road network gets home safe and well.
Working with experienced professionals, you’ll learn how we deliver a variety of health, safety and wellbeing activities at National Highways. This includes:
1. Supporting safe planning, management and delivery of our day-to-day operations and major projects.
2. Advising on Health, Safety and Wellbeing policies and processes.
3. Identifying health and wellbeing risks and working to remove, reduce and control them.
4. Promoting a safety culture at National Highways through our key initiatives (e.g. Home, Safe and Well, Be the Change).
5. Monitoring and reporting on SHE performance and record-keeping to comply with legal and workplace requirements.
6. Working with other key teams and stakeholders such as local authorities, Health and Safety Executive, Occupational Health, HR.
We’ll support you with a comprehensive learning and training programme to develop your skills and knowledge, with plenty of opportunities to apply your learning in the office and out on the network.
You’ll complete a Level 3 apprenticeship, which will open the door to a variety of SHE-related careers, or help you qualify for a higher-level health and safety professional apprenticeship.

To be eligible for the apprenticeship learning programme, you’ll also need to meet these essential requirements:
Minimum of five GCSEs (including English and Maths, at grade C/grade 4 or above).
Assessment centres will take place in April and May 2025.
To be eligible for a place on the programme, you must be available to attend the 4-day induction, 8th -11th September 2025.
All offers for our apprenticeships are subject to satisfactory completion of pre-employment checks, including Right to Work, reference, and DBS criminal record checks.
Due to the salary level of this role, we cannot offer sponsorship for the position for individuals that don't have the Right to Work in the UK. Successful candidates will require Right to Work for the duration of the programme.
