Cancer Research UK are looking for a Research Programme Manager to join our Children’s and Young People’s Cancer team
Cancers affecting children and young people is a priority area for Cancer Research UK with a dedicated strategy to address the unique challenges holding back progress. The Children’s and Young People’s team is responsible for developing and driving this strategy, and it's an exciting time of growth as we increase our ambition and drive transformational change for children and young people affected by cancer.
The Research Programme Manager will be responsible for a range of activities within the team, including – delivering a programme of initiatives, building and managing key stakeholder relationships, and developing and driving new strategies and opportunities. This role will be instrumental in working cross organisationally to drive forward our developing policy work, performing a portfolio analysis, and supporting our communications, marketing and events activities.
What will I be doing?
* Build and maintain positive working relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders, identifying opportunities and areas of need to further our organisational activity for CYP research.
* Manage and drive key strategic programmes of activity involved in the delivery of the children’s and young people’s strategy, taking initiatives from concept to delivery and implementation across the relevant areas of the portfolio, e.g. CYP policy and event series.
* Actively drive or contribute to cross organisational working groups, influencing in a matrix fashion, to support coordination and delivery of CYP activity.
* Gain a thorough understanding of the children’s and young people’s cancer research, policy, partnership and funding landscape, gathering insights from strategic analysis, and driving the development and delivery of renewed strategies.
* Keeping up-to-date on the children’s and young people’s cancer landscape in CRUK and beyond, to contribute to in-house expertise on CYP cancer both internally and externally.
* Actively engage and consult patients and parents/carers affected by children's and young people's cancers, including our CYP Patient Insights Panel, to ensure appropriate influence of those with lived experience in shaping our work.
* Confidently represent CRUK and our CYP work nationally and internationally.
What are you looking for?
* Strong science background in a relevant subject, equivalent work experience.
* Significant research or research-related experience, for example in an academic, NHS, industrial research and/or research funding/management.
* Demonstrable understanding of the research landscape, its challenges and opportunities.
* Experience of developing and delivering strategies, ability to spot opportunities and translate these into operational plans, thinking beyond the immediate issue to look at broader topics or themes.
* Proven ability of planning, managing and delivering projects; ability to prioritise and manage multiple tasks, showing adaptability to meet challenging targets and deadlines.
* Excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills, with experience of building and managing relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders, at all levels of seniority.
* Ability to influence effectively at all levels; judging situations and acting diplomatically, as required.
* A commitment to accuracy and attention to detail, with demonstrable analytical and problem-solving skills, and ability to communicate to great effect
* Comfortable with building something new and an ability to manage ambiguity
* Takes the initiative and sees projects through to completion, driving excellent standards.
* Able to work well independently and with minimal supervision. Good judgement on when and how to involve key stakeholders in issues
* Willingness to travel within the UK, and internationally, as required
