About us
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Apprentice Vehicle and Plant Mechanic within the Council's Fleet Services Department. This is a 4-year fixed-term apprenticeship, where you will learn how to service and repair the Council's varied fleet of vehicles and plant equipment ranging from heavy commercial trucks such as refuse collection vehicles, light commercial vehicles, agricultural tractors, large and small grounds care maintenance machinery, and handheld equipment.
The role
You will be required to complete an industry-recognised Standards/NVQ apprenticeship whilst working with qualified mechanics through the varying stages of your apprenticeship to gain the necessary hands-on experience. In addition, you will be required to attend and complete academic studies to gain relevant industry-recognised qualifications. Studies and training will require travel, block release, and overnight stays.
The VMU workshops operate from 6am - 10pm Monday to Thursday and 6am - 6pm Friday. Staff work 37 hours a week on an alternate weekly shift pattern. Only staff over 18 years of age will be required to work alternating shift patterns; those under 18 years will work fixed daytime hours.
What's needed?
GCSEs (Grade 4 or above) including Maths, English, and a Science. Commitment to undertaking and completing an appropriate Apprenticeship Framework and Functional Skills.
