Job summary The Pathology Directorate is seeking a responsible, enthusiastic individual to join the Haematology and Transfusion Department as an Associate Practitioner. Duties include receipting, preparing, and analysing diagnostic samples, as well as analyser maintenance. Work will follow Standard Operating Procedures under the supervision of State Registered Biomedical Scientists. Accuracy and attention to detail are essential. Candidates require a foundation degree or equivalent diploma-level (Level 5) experience. Previous laboratory experience is advantageous. Based at Southport & Ormskirk Hospital, the laboratory also serves Whiston and St Helens Hospitals, requiring rotation across sites. Emergency Departments operate at Whiston and Southport, with Whiston housing the Regional Burns and Plastic Surgery Unit and Southport the Spinal Injuries Unit. The Haematology laboratory is fully equipped with Telepath (DXC) and Sysmex EPU middleware. Whiston features tracked Sysmex XN9100 analysers, SP-50 with digital morphology, Interrliner, Auto-Compact ESR, CN coagulometers, and Sebia Capillary Electrophoresis for Haemoglobinopathy screening. Southport has XN 2000 analysers and a CN coagulometer, Ormskirk an XN1000. The Transfusion Department operates Grifols blood grouping analysers with EVM middleware at Whiston and Southport. Interview Date - To Be Confirmed Main duties of the job The role will involve working in a busy laboratory and working alongside Biomedical Scientists and Medical Laboratory Assistants to ensure the timely turnaround of results. The department runs a continuous service providing 24 hour coverage to a busy Hospital Trust. The appointment is to the Pathology Directorate and post holders will be expected to work at any Trust site and in any department that is required. The post holder is required to follow standard operating procedures and follow health & safety guidelines to protect themselves and colleagues at all times. The role involves the handling of blood and body fluids from receipt in the laboratory to their safe storage following analysis. Strict adherence to policy to maintain patient sample identity throughout sample handling is required, and all data must be accurately entered into the Laboratory information System. AP's will operate analysers and carry out non-complex tests and maintenance procedures to ensure an efficient workflow throughout the laboratory. They will assist Biomedical Scientists in the course of their duties assigned to Haematology/Transfusion or and will rotate through all sections in that discipline and Specimen Reception.
