Position: Director of Quality Engineering

Location: Royal Mail Farringdon (3x days a week in London Farringdon Office)

THE ROLE:
Leads and owns the QE strategy for Royal Mail, embedding modern agile QE within teams, and performing traditional waterfall test assurance. Sets the strategy for a mix of internal vs. third parties.
Accountable for the QE budget and partner performance, ensuring we have the right Test as a Service partners, delivering value for money and quality of QA/test services, to embed quality at all levels of software engineering within Technology teams.
Builds a strong internal RM test leadership capability, managing partner performance for each of the portfolio areas.
Acts as the leader for all testing standards, tooling, and assurance processes across the full RMG Technology estate.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
* Define, implement, and mature a QE strategy supported across technology
* Accountable for the QE budget and partner performance, ensuring we have the right Test as a Service partners, delivering value for money and quality of QA/test services
* Define and implement KPI-driven quality outcomes that support the strategy and business needs
* Ensure the adoption of modern shift-left test practices including test automation and embedding testing in teams, moving from manual test and release to automated CI/CD
* Scale down the reliance on manual assurance type testing over time
* Build the right capacity/capability of Royal Mail and external testing/assurance resources and suppliers (incl. TaaS)
* Target reduction of TaaS through automation or insourcing
* Ensure cost-effective provision of testing/assurance capability
* Own the technical quality and standards of the Testing & Assurance function, driving “the how” for Product and Platform teams
KEY SKILLS:
* Proven experience in a senior engineering or Quality Engineering leadership role, preferably in a fast-paced and technology-driven organization
* Exposure to or played a key role in digital transformation or strategic insourcing programs
* Demonstrated leadership experience, preferably in roles such as Test Manager, Team Lead, or similar positions, with a track record
