Digital Solutions & Services are responsible for providing the digital platform to enable the best possible service to staff, students and stakeholders across the University and beyond. We take a collaborative approach to developing strategic goals to provide a diverse range of information technology and business services designed to support learning, teaching and research at the University of Derby.
The key part of the role is to manage, support and mentor a team of second line engineers and ensure the team are delivering on escalated tasks, varied operational work and providing assurance on the health of the estate. It is a technical lead role and the successful candidate will work closely with the Digital Operations Manager to left shift work from the infrastructure teams, ensuring the performance of systems such as the network, endpoints, server (physical and Azure based), and Audio-Visual estate amongst others.
You will ensure all services are running as expected, are patched, secure and maintained to the current standards. You will deliver efficiency, reliability and quality of service by ensuring continuous improvement through monitoring and identification of issues, automating resolutions, and working closely with service delivery and infrastructure teams.
As part of the role you will remediate issues on the estate and escalate issues to the infrastructure team for resolution as needed, and will lean in to assist with the 1st line and field engineers and support strategic infrastructure projects.

Responsibilities
* Lead, manage, motivate, mentor, develop and empower staff within the team using an effective, managed, and structured approach.
* Work towards continued improvements in staff engagement within the team.
* Ensure appropriate Human Resources (HR) procedures are followed to manage performance and staff development plans.
* Devise and agree staff training plans to maintain current awareness and certification of current and future technology to ensure a modern, relevant, and high performing team.
* Working with the Service Delivery and Infrastructure Management Team to develop and implement innovative projects and services to support the digital strategy and business plans.
* Review, approve and allocate work packages to team members and ensure repeatable tasks are carried out and reviewed to continually assess potential automation.
* Ensure service level agreements (SLAs) and key performance indicators (KPIs) are maintained and reported on, and that work tickets are dealt with in a speedy and effective manner.
* Responsible for leading on key services within the team.
* Responsible for ensuring a strong customer focused attitude and always displaying brilliance.
* Responsible for solution documentation in support of operational readiness, which may include training, process development and explanation of standards.
* Responsible for ensuring Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity processes are in place and tested for area of focus, or test and maintain those from infrastructure.
* Work closely with other teams across the business to improve efficiency and adapt existing processes to enable a secure, smooth, and successful migration to a modern hybrid cloud infrastructure.
* Responsible for leading on key projects which can be across department and high value £500K+.
Experience
* Significant experience of managing and mentoring a technical team
* Proven experience of working in a fast paced operational team, able to prioritise and respond to competing requests
* Significant experience of implementing innovative solutions that are customer and future focused
* Significant experience of leading an operational service, creating and delivering against KPIs and SLAs
* Significant experience of developing and deploying high level operational solutions
* Proven experience delivering and managing in a high performance multi-disciplinary operational team.
* Proven experience of managing stakeholders and escalating issues as needed
* Significant experience of monitoring a large IT estate with detailed knowledge in at least one of Networks, Endpoints or a Server Infrastructure
* Experience of creating and managing disaster recovery and business continuity processes
Qualifications
* Relevant Degree or demonstrable equivalent experience
* Professional and/or technical qualifications, e.g. CCNA / MCP or substantial, applied equivalent experience
