JOB PURPOSE:
The production unit shift manager is responsible for the line management of operator teams and to deliver the safety, quality, efficiency & waste objectives for their area on shift.
KPIs & KAIs: OEE, Waste, Cost of Quality, D-Incidents, Housekeeping & Hygiene Scores, Safety Leading Indicators
RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Technical / Functional: Shift managers need to have a strong background in manufacturing. They should have a firm grasp on the principles of people leadership, continuous improvement, loss capture, safety standards, quality standards, and incident management.
* Safety:
o Action Completion: Work with the safety team and production coordinator to complete relevant actions from the safety action plan.
o Audits: Expected to carry out and follow up safety audits in line with site requirements.
o Incident Management: Manage safety incidents as they occur on shift.
o Incident Investigations: Carry out investigations for safety incidents that are isolated to their shift.
o Safety Tags: Ensure teams are proactively raising safety tags.
o Training: Work with the training department to ensure teams are trained in relevant safety elements.
* Quality:
o Action Tracking: Work with the safety team and production coordinator to complete relevant actions from the quality action plan.
o Audits: Expected to carry out and follow up quality audits in line with site requirements.
o Incident Management: Manage quality incidents as they occur on shift.
o Incident Investigations: Carry out investigations for incidents isolated to their shift.
o Validation: Proactively drive and validate quality checks.
o Quality Tags: Ensure teams are proactively raising quality tags.
o Training: Work with the training department to ensure teams are trained in relevant areas of quality.
o Operational Decision Making: Make decisions on shift relating to quality.
* Operational Activities:
o Decision Making: Make key decisions on shift and coordinate factory activities.
o Standards Enforcement: Enforce site standards on behaviour, safety, quality, breaks, and processes.
o Team Governance: Provide governance and leadership for semi-autonomous teams.
o Performance Management: Manage the performance of people on shift.
o Activity Execution & Oversight: Ensure production activities are carried out professionally.
o Production Sign Off: Sign off resumption of production after significant downtime.
o Disruption Communication: Communicate changes to the plan that need to occur on shift.
o Handovers: Ensure clear and detailed handovers are carried out professionally.
o Standards & Process Improvement: Communicate where standards or processes are unclear.
o Labour Planning: Manage the short-term labour plan in their area.
* Projects:
o Receiving: Provide input into projects at the design or implementation stage.
* People Management:
o Direct Reports: Responsible for the line management of semi-autonomous operator teams.
o Employee Relations: Carry out disciplinary investigations/hearings and hear grievances.
* Continuous Improvement:
o Skills & Knowledge: Understand key principles of continuous improvement.
o Information Input: Ensure accurate communication of loss phenomena.
o Improvement Ideas: Suggest and implement improvement ideas.
o Long Term Improvement Plans: Collaborate with others to build long-term improvement plans.
* Training & Recruitment:
o Training Plans: Work closely with the site training team.
o Trainer / Trainee Management: Manage daily training activities.
ALL ABOUT YOU:
Professional Qualifications: National school leaver qualifications in Reading and Comprehension, Writing, and Mathematics.
Experience Required:
* Strong understanding of the end-to-end manufacturing process.
* Knowledge of national Safety and Environmental legislation.
* Strong servant leader with demonstrable experience in manufacturing.
* Experience in leading improvement projects.
* Strong continuous improvement knowledge.
* Excellent organisation & communication skills.
* Ability to drive a strong safety culture.
* Ability to deal with a fast-paced environment.
* Curiosity about self-development.
* Reasonable mechanical skills to address day-to-day issues.
