Department: Publishing Location: Remote first, UK Compensation: circa £35,000 Description We are seeking a dynamic and dedicated Commissioning Editor to join our award-winning books programme. You will be a core member of our books publishing team, responsible for managing and developing a defined portfolio in the field of politics, policy, and public administration. You will commission new titles, manage editor and author relationships, oversee the timely delivery of manuscripts, and create and deliver a strategic plan for your list. This is a great opportunity to play a key role in the development of an impactful books programme, publishing works aligned with the United Nations SDGs and Emerald's real-world content strategy. Location: We perform at our best when we feel trusted and are able to choose an approach to working that suits us best, which is why we are a remote-first company. However, we also believe in face to face collaboration, and our UK colleagues meet once a month for team time and quarterly for company get togethers in our Leeds office, so we ask that you be within a commutable distance that you are comfortable with in order to attend the office on those occasions. Day to day we’ll trust you to: Sign an annually agreed number of titles consisting of monographs, edited collections, and short form projects. Work with internal and external stakeholders, from authors, reviewers, editorial and production to rights and ethics, to ensure a smooth publication process. Develop close relationships with authors and editors, expanding your external network to bring new authors to the list. Contribute to the achievement of portfolio targets for product mix, subject coverage, attention, author and editor satisfaction Handover an agreed number of titles per annum. Promote key signings, news and collaborations to the wider company using appropriate tools. Work with Editorial and Production colleagues, monitor the end-to-end process from commissioning to publication at key milestones ensuring slippage is communicated to authors and editors as appropriate. Deliver a strategic commissioning plan for your subject area/s aligned to SDGs/Emerald Goals, to include commissioning strategies and attendance at events, conferences, etc. Manage publishing outputs to targets and performance KPIs. Explore opportunities to sign new forms of content as appropriate (podcasts, blogs, case studies, policy briefs, video or audio content, etc. other) to evolve existing book offer and drive our real-world impact commitment. You’ll need to have: Strong written and interpersonal skills; able to engage and influence at all levels. Effective stakeholder management and communication. Excellent organisational skills. Knowledge of publishing ethics. Strong analytical skills. Negotiation and commissioning skills. Understanding of the academic publishing environment, including industry trends and challenges. Familiarity with Emerald and third-party systems (e.g., Emerald Insight, Power BI, Cognos, RUBI, CRM, ScholarOne, Altmetric, BooksoniX/TMS, Dimensions). What’s in it for you?
