The postholder will deliver the health protection function for the Isle of Wight Council working closely with the Director of Public Health, the Consultant in Public Health and the council’s emergency management team, together providing focused health protection coordination and leadership.

The postholder will work collaboratively with the public health team, other Council Directorates, NHS trusts, Integrated Care Board, GPs, schools, and other partners focusing on prevention and health protection to ensure that robust systems are in place for timely and rigorous reporting, investigation and intervention on health protection issues affecting population health. There is also a preventative aspect to observe and report on data and trends, influence partners, deliver training and rehearse responses to incidents, and deliver behaviour change marketing campaigns e.g. to take up screening and vaccination. The postholder will play a key role in the development and sharing of information to the public and community leaders to reduce risk and harm to health during incident response activities on the Island. The postholder will also have the opportunity to contribute to other areas of public health work within the team.
Key responsibilities for this role are:
* To provide public health expertise to the local authority health protection role, for example preventing and responding to infectious diseases or environmental hazards impacting health and providing assurance of screening and immunisation coverage.
* To support the Director of Public Health in planning for and responding to incidents and emergencies which may affect the health of the Isle of Wight population.
As a dedicated professional, you’ll be aware of the latest developments in your field and the wider public policy landscape. Through partnership-working and evidence-based research, you will support the development of targeted interventions for communities at high risk of poorer outcomes to reduce inequalities.
You will be a good communicator and self-starter, able to be organised, good at team working, reporting progress and effective at seeking agreement for decisions. You will be confident at contributing your ideas while consistently working to standard processes and working within your level of experience and expertise.

Applicants will ideally have post graduate qualification in public health or a similar field to include evidence of content on infectious diseases, communicable disease control or equivalent.
We support agile and hybrid working. There will be a need to work on the Island to build relationships with partners and to attend face to face meetings approximately once a fortnight, and also to occasionally attend meetings in mainland locations in the south east. However, the team works agilely from home much of the time using online technology. We also support flexible working where possible.
