Purpose of the Role
The Head of Clinical Services is a key leadership role, responsible for the clinical design, governance, performance, and strategic development of our insourced services. The post-holder will ensure all services are delivered to the highest standards of clinical quality, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency, while contributing to business growth through innovation, partnership working, and workforce development.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic & Clinical Leadership
* Drive the strategic vision and roadmap for clinical services in collaboration with the Managing Director and clinical team.
* Translate the company’s mission into operational excellence and clinical best practice across all service lines.
* Identify and evaluate new clinical models and specialties to expand our insourcing footprint.
* Represent the clinical voice at board and senior leadership level, contributing to business planning, contract bids, and service design.
Clinical Governance & Compliance
* Provide executive oversight for clinical governance, quality assurance, and risk management across all contracts.
* Ensure full compliance with all relevant clinical and regulatory standards where appropriate (e.g., CQC, Care Inspectorate Wales, the Care Inspectorate in Scotland, RQIA, NHS England, HSE, HIQA, GMC, NMC, HPCP).
* Lead on incident management, investigations, complaints resolution, and clinical audits.
* Champion a culture of continuous quality improvement and shared learning across teams.
Operational Management & Delivery
* Lead the national Clinical Services function including Clinical Leads, Clinical Nurse Advisors, and Head of Nursing and Performance.
* Oversee mobilisation and delivery of insourced services across outpatient, surgical, diagnostic, and community care pathways.
* Monitor and improve clinical KPIs, patient safety metrics, productivity levels, and patient outcomes.
* Troubleshoot underperforming services and implement recovery plans where needed.
Workforce Planning & Development
* Lead the clinical workforce strategy, advising on contractor engagement, talent pipeline, and succession planning.
* Work with recruitment and onboarding teams to ensure timely placement of compliant and competent staff.
* Establish frameworks to monitor competencies, revalidation, and mandatory training compliance.
External Engagement & Relationship Management
* Act as the senior clinical representative for NHS Trusts, HSE hospitals, Integrated Care Boards (ICBs), and other stakeholders.
* Build effective relationships with commissioners, regulators, clinical networks, and partner organisations.
* Attend contract reviews, inspections, and service development meetings with clients across the UK and Ireland.
* Contribute to the transformation of clinical services through digital innovation, technology adoption, and modernisation of pathways.
* Support the integration of patient safety dashboards, electronic documentation, and virtual care models.
* Lead pilot programmes and service redesign projects that enhance efficiency and value for money.
Person Specification:
Qualifications
* Registered healthcare professional (NMC/HCPC) – essential.
* Master’s degree in Healthcare Leadership, Clinical Governance, Public Health, or equivalent – desirable.
* Recognised qualification in Clinical Governance or Risk Management – desirable.
Experience
* 7+ years of senior leadership experience in healthcare, preferably within insourcing, outsourcing, NHS Trusts or private healthcare providers.
* Strong track record of managing multidisciplinary teams and delivering clinical services across multiple specialties.
* Proven experience of leading clinical governance, regulatory inspections, and service improvement programmes.
* In-depth knowledge of UK and/or Irish healthcare systems and regulatory standards, NHS frameworks, and public health policy.
* Exceptional leadership and people management skills.
* High level of emotional intelligence, influence, and communication.
* Ability to analyse clinical and financial data to drive performance.
* Resilient, proactive, and solutions-focused in fast-paced environments.
* Strategic thinker with operational execution capability.
* Strong understanding of risk, audit, and compliance methodologies.
* Ability to provide professional advice and clinical leadership to members of the senior clinical team
* Demonstrable success in delivering change and performance with and through your management of clinical teams.
* Demonstrable ability to analyse complex problems and to develop practical and workable solutions to address them.
* Proven ability to manage and deliver to deadlines and within resources.
* Ability to engage the clinical team with the strategic direction and delivery plans, establishing clear work priorities, delegating effectively, ensuring a capability to deliver.
