Job Purpose
As Commercial Solicitor, you will provide legal advice and representation to United Utilities to ensure commercial interests are protected and all appropriate legal advice is provided.
The work will primarily relate to the functions of United Utilities Water Limited as the North West’s water company but may involve undertaking legal work for other parts of the UU Group as required.
Work will include dealing with all commercial and contractual matters that arise, e.g. mainstream commercial contracts, IT, IP, Construction, statutory agreements and sometimes company law work.
Accountabilities & Responsibilities
* Ensure that accurate and timely legal advice is provided for all matters as required including to support the timely conclusion of commercial agreements on appropriate terms, and the conclusion of agreements arising out of our statutory functions
* Assist our business in (1) implementing and embedding commercial/contractual arrangements and relationships (2) managing disputes and points of interpretation during the contract life cycle
* Ensure all areas of the business are aware of the requirements of the regulatory framework relevant to their activities
* Monitor and help manage changes in the law and regulatory framework
* Develop a good general understanding of the organisational areas and issues in our business to help anticipate and highlight major legal, regulatory, commercial and competition risks
* Monitor and review (in consultation with relevant managers) policies, procedures and documentation adopted and used in our business to ensure compliance
* Advise on risks involved in actual or threatened litigation and the procedures and timescales for litigation to enable informed decision making and ensure the business is represented as required
Technical Skills & Experience
* Able to work with different sources of information (legal and/or factual)
* Good understanding of relevant UU processes and governance
* Good understanding of relevant legal/water industry processes and governance
* Relevant experience in a commercial environment
* Good knowledge of commercial law (including commercial contracts, IP, IT, European procurement, corporate and construction) and relevant water and sewerage industry law
* Good management and interpersonal skills and professional approach, the ability to respond under pressure, work to tight deadlines and good written and oral communication skills

* Qualified Solicitor (enrolled in England & Wales) with equivalent experience
