Cellular Pathology Lead Biomedical Scientist

An exciting opportunity has arisen within North Midlands and Cheshire Pathology Service (NMCPS), Cellular Pathology Department. We are seeking applications from suitably qualified, self-motivated and enthusiastic Biomedical Scientists with appropriate experience in Cellular Pathology for the role of Lead Biomedical Scientist (BMS). NMCPS Cellular Pathology processes more than 70,000 surgical cases, 5500 non-gynaecological cytology cases. As Lead BMS, you will provide expert and operational leadership to a large and complex network laboratory.

Our mission is to create a large and diverse Cellular Pathology Department providing individuals with personalised and flexible working patterns to support their professional interests and development.

Main duties of the job
As Lead BMS, you will manage and prioritise a complex workload with rapidly changing demands and provide effective operational leadership and management for the whole Cellular Pathology team in line with Trust policies and procedures. You will also be part of a wider operational management team and be involved with major projects such as implementing digital pathology and the validation/verification of new supplier equipment and implementing lean principles/processes.
Your responsibilities will include maintaining UKAS accreditation, supporting the Trust's Human Tissue Authority Designated Individual to ensure compliance with regulations, and supporting with regulatory visits. The post holder will also plan and deliver service developments and maintain the department's finances. In addition to line management, the Lead BMS is responsible for relationships with internal and external stakeholders from clinical teams to suppliers. You will lead by example and will be expected to maintain your scientific and technical expertise as a BMS.

Person Specification
Education and qualifications
* BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science or equivalent (grand-parented)
* MSc or equivalent qualification to FIBMS Standard
* Ongoing CPD
* Current HCPC Registration (Scientist)
* Recognised Management Qualification / Training
* Evidence of a commitment to continuous professional development
* Teaching Qualification
* Further specialist training and qualifications appropriate to the speciality
Experience
* A minimum of 5 years post registration experience in a senior Biomedical Scientist position within the speciality
* Evidence of successful management of clinical services
* Evidence of effective management of a complex and diverse workforce
* Experience of education and training
* Experience of using a range of IT applications, including Microsoft Office and Pathology computer systems
* Experience in Human Resource management and HR policy implementation
* Professional experience within the NHS
* Experience in professional roles such as UKAS Assessor, IBMS Examiner, participation in developing EQA schemes, and teaching Biomedical Science
* Experience of business strategy and planning
* Experience of leading the implementation of service improvement including complex change management programmes
Skills and knowledge
* Managerially competent in a range of operational areas including Technical, Quality, Safety, Human Resources and Finance
* Up-to-date knowledge of UKAS, HTA, MHRA, and HPA Standards and their application within the area of expertise
* Comprehensive understanding of the professional training/education agenda
* Proven ability to work as part of a cross-disciplinary team
* Strategic awareness of current issues within Pathology
* Experience of active participation in UKAS quality assessments & accreditation visits
* Proven ability to organise workload in line with agreed schedules and deadlines
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills
