XLCC is the innovative high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable company establishing a new green industry in the UK, with the first factory at Hunterston, Ayrshire on the west coast of Scotland. Our mission is to provide the connectivity required for renewable power to meet future global energy needs.\n\nSubsea cable technology has a significant impact in reducing the environmental consequences of electricity generation consumption around the globe. XLCCâs HVDC cables run deep under the sea, enabling the transfer of renewable power from generation sites to end users. \n\nIn addition to HVDC subsea extruded cable, XLCC will provide additional services such as cable laying, protection and repair services. \n\nThere are purchase options in place for cable offtake for clients with various projects including export cables (for bringing offshore wind power back to the beach), for grid reinforcement projects (to improve and upgrade the national grid) and for interconnectors (moving power from one country to another country). XLCC will expand capacity when there are contracts in place providing a business case for expansion.\n\nWe have an exciting opportunity for an apprentice cable Jointer to join our expanding manufacturing team. Working at a purpose built facility in Irvine, close to our first factory in Hunterston, Ayrshire on the west coast of Scotland.\n\nXLCC have created a Modern Apprenticeship (MA), which includes a day release with Ayrshire College in Electrical Engineering, allowing apprentices to complete an NC, HNC or HND depending on previous qualifications and experience, whilst training to become a highly skilled factory cable jointer.\n\nCable will be produced in the factory at 20km lengths, then joined together to reach a maximum length of 160km in the factory. The cable will then be tested (for electrical conductivity and resistance) using electrical reactors. Cable passing the factory acceptance test will then be exported to a cable laying vessel for subsea deployment.\n\nCable joints will be made on a 24 x 7 basis. There will be a large team of production Jointers producing certified 525kV DC flexible factory joints as part of a multiple team shift pattern. This position offers a unique apprenticeship program lasting up to four years, aimed at developing skilled and highly competent cable jointing professionals in the field of electrical and mechanical engineering. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to progress to higher education, become lead jointers, or assume supervisory roles within the business.\n\nThe apprentice training programme includes the delivery of an industry specialized training module prepared by MJ Marcable consulting, providing cable industry fundamentals to the apprentice. On the job training and certification will take place at a state of the art facility over a 4-year period, using test lengths of cable to progress through the competences working up to the final XLCC product which will be 525kV DC submarine flexible factory joints. Development activities for the offshore field joint will also be taking place in parallel with the factory joint, and there will be the future opportunity to work as part of the field jointing team, on the Cable Laying Vessel.\n\nThe cable jointing training programme is incremental throughout the voltage levels. Apprentices will ultimately be required to produce 3x certified factory joints to the final design specification to demonstrate proficiency and final sign off. \n â¢\tAchieving accreditation at each stage of the apprenticeship development scheme.\no\t66kV AC\no\t110kV AC\no\t230kV AC\no\t320kV DC\no\t525kV DC\nâ¢\tSuccessfully attend modern apprenticeship college day release as required.\nâ¢\tHigh achieving apprentices may have the opportunity to purse a University degree.\nâ¢\tAll manufacturing processes followed and signed on completion in a timely manner.\nâ¢\tContribute to right first time production.\nâ¢\tFeeding back on process improvement opportunities.\nâ¢\tAny issues raised and communicated to the Supervisor.\nâ¢\tAll manufacturing operations are performed in a safe and compliant manner.\nâ¢\tProvision of support for the XLCC STEM outreach program. â¢\tPerforming Engineering Operations (PEO) â SQF Level 5 or above.\nâ¢\tYou will be expected to complete the following at Ayrshire College (if you havenât already):\no\tWelding PEO units\no\tMJ Marcable module completion\no\tF5FM 12: Engineering Quality â an introduction\nâ¢\tMechanical/Electrical engineering work experience desirable.\nâ¢\tMIG/TIG welding experience desirable.\nâ¢\tA passion for renewable energy and sustainability.\nâ¢\tStrong communication skills, written and verbal.\nâ¢\tProficient computer skills, including experience using MS Office.\nâ¢\tExcellent attention to detail, with a passion for manufacturing quality.\nâ¢\tWillingness to learn and adapt to new technologies and practices.\nâ¢\tTeam player.\n
