A bit about me:
I am a profoundly Deaf British Sign Language (BSL) user with Usher Syndrome, which means I am also visually impaired. While I can walk unaided, I have no peripheral vision and require guiding support to help me navigate obstacles such as uneven surfaces, children, or dogs. (In low-light or dark conditions, I experience complete blindness and need physical guiding support, and some knowledge of Hands-on Signing would be beneficial. (However, support when it is dark would be rare.) I am an honest and enthusiastic individual who enjoys meeting new people and embracing new experiences. Creativity is one of my strengths, and I have a passion for crafting and hands-on projects. I thrive in dynamic environments where I can bring fresh ideas and a positive attitude. I am passionate about bringing Deaf Awareness and BSL into the wider community and have been teaching children and adults BSL.
About the role:
I am looking for a British Sign Language (BSL) communication support worker to assist me in various aspects of daily life. This role involves: Providing BSL communication support, including translating letters, making phone calls, and writing emails. Guiding support due to my visual impairment, ensuring my safety while navigating different environments. Accompanying me to social activities, such as an art group. Driving me to meetings, appointments, and shopping. Occasionally assisting with communication support for my voluntary work teaching BSL. Being flexible as to the opportunities that come our way.
I am looking for someone who is: Self-employed. Qualified in BSL Level 4 or 6 (Level 3 may be considered with the right experience and attributes). Someone who has experience of supporting visual impairment. I would like someone who is: Honest, patient, and has a good sense of humour. Creative and open to new experiences. I am looking for an applicant with an understanding of Asian and Muslim culture, as this is essential for providing the appropriate support.
