Install, repair and maintain refrigeration and air conditioning equipment in industrial and commercial buildings, this can range from a small cooling unit in a single office to large complex systems. Work is carried out in a wide range of premises such as factories, schools, offices, food warehouses, supermarkets, ice rinks etc. Depending on where they are working, engineers can expect to be out and about most of the time. The variety is endless. To become a fully trained, qualified refrigeration engineer normally takes 3 years to SVQ Level 3. You will be trained by your employer and at an appropriate college. You will develop specialist skills in using copper, plastic and steel pipes, brazing and an understanding of electrics. You will be working towards an SVQ Level 3 in Install, Commission and Maintain Refrigeration Systems. You will need to have an interest in mechanical, electrical and practical work and enjoy problem solving. You should have good communication and organisational skills and a methodical approach, which will help in reading diagrams and specifications. You will also be required to sit and pass our assessment.
