Summary
The Town of Shrewsbury is seeking a detail-oriented and community-focused Assistant Assessor to join our dedicated Assessor’s Office team! This position offers a dynamic mix of office-based work, public interaction, and field inspections that support the fair and equitable property assessment across the Town.
As the Assistant Assessor, you’ll play a pivotal role in the inspection, valuation, and assessment of residential and commercial properties. You’ll supervise property inspection staff, assist in tax billing, and be the go-to for interpreting Massachusetts assessment laws for residents and businesses. You’ll also manage databases, coordinate with town departments, and support accurate property records.
Key Responsibilities
* Supervise the residential inspection program and support field data collection
* Inspect and classify residential and commercial properties for taxation
* Determine market values using appraisal techniques and market research
* Process real estate, personal property, and excise tax abatements
* Assist with quarterly billing in MUNIS and update commitment books
* Maintain subdivision records, building permits, and GIS mapping data
* Communicate clearly with the public about assessments, abatements, and exemptions
Qualifications
* Education: Associate’s Degree required
* Experience: 3–5 years in assessment, real estate, or related field
* Strong understanding of Massachusetts General Laws related to property tax
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and assessment tools
* Preferred experience with Vision CAMA, MUNIS, and DOR Gateway systems
* Exceptional attention to detail, organizational skills, and customer service
Working Conditions
* Hybrid of office and field work
* Ability to inspect properties in varied terrain and weather conditions
* Regular lifting of items up to 10 pounds
* Valid Massachusetts driver’s license required
