Senior Design Manager – Infrastructure
Location - Grangemouth, Stirlingshire
Purpose of the Role:
As Senior Design Manager, you will be responsible on a large project or a portfolio of projects during tender and delivery, for the management of design organisations and for the coordination of design input and review, to ensure that designs are safe, efficient and compliant with standards to construct, operate and maintain.

2. Lead on undertaking, or liaising with, the Principal Designer organisational role, as defined in the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations and associated guidance.
3. Act as the Service Manager for the NEC Professional Service Contract with Consultants, with support from commercial and planning staff.
4. Support the Project Lead with design matters in the NEC Engineering & Construction Contract with the Client.
5. Develop and operate Design Management Plans, BIM Execution Plans and associated documents.
6. Prepare and assess tender documentation for design services to recommend for award.
7. Ensure design management processes and systems are operating effectively.
8. Coordinate and develop design and survey scopes and change instructions.
9. Coordinate input to, and review of, design with stakeholders including the Client, public, construction team, suppliers and third-party asset owners and consenting bodies.
10. Coordinate and input to the appraisal of design and methodology options to optimise safety and efficiency.
11. Coordinate and input to the designer's proposed construction sequence and the integrated design and construction risk register.
12. Coordinate with designers, and input to, the temporary works, lifting, traffic management and other construction methodology aspects that affect the permanent works design.
13. Organise and chair design review meetings. Distribute minutes and coordinate actions.
14. Coordinate and undertake design review and acceptance procedures.
15. Monitor, analyse and report design production and design management performance.
16. Input to, and review of, subcontract scopes, construction method statements and inspection and test plans produced by site engineering staff to ensure that they comply with design requirements.
17. Coordinate with designers and input to the technical queries, material approval requests, contractor design approvals, design change requests, non-conformance reports and as-built drawing mark-ups etc produced by site engineering staff during construction.
18. Provide peer review for other projects in the business unit.
19. Support and lead continuous improvement initiatives.
20. Write, review, present and distribute knowledge share information.
21. Manage support staff.
Role Dimensions:

22. Review the Consultant's cost forecasts, applications for payment and quotations.
23. Input to the Contractor's cost forecasts, applications for payment and quotations for design matters.
24. Coordinate the estimation of whole life costs for design option appraisals.
Non-financial (staff management etc)
25. Line management of up to support staff members, such as Design Managers, Design Coordinators and Document Controllers.
26. Functional leadership in design management across a programme of projects.
27. Participate in industry forums and social value initiatives.
Key Outputs:

29. Monitoring, sending and responding to design process and contractual communications within periods for reply.
30. Chairing and minuting design review, collaborative planning and early warning meetings.

Person Specification:
Competency Requirements
32. Ability to use a combination of general and specialist engineering knowledge and understanding to optimise the application of advanced and complex systems.
33. Ability to apply appropriate theoretical and practical methods to manage the design of complex infrastructure.
34. Ability to provide technical and commercial leadership.
35. Ability to demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills.
36. Ability to demonstrate a personal commitment to professional standards, recognising obligations to society, the profession and the environment.
Technical / Professional Expertise and Qualifications Required
37. Degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
38. Chartered Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers.
39. Previous experience as both a Site Engineer or Manager and as a Design Manager through all stages of project lifecycles.
40. Previous experience recruiting, managing and developing staff.
