The job itself We have an exciting opportunity working in our beautiful East Riding of Yorkshire, for a self motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our busy and friendly Trading Standards Service as a part time (3 days/22.5 hours) Trading Standards Enforcement Officer, working together to make a real difference to our communities. Ideally, we would look to appoint an individual with previous experience of working in trading standards and be a part or fully qualified trading standards professional. However there is a need for flexibility and for the right individual with the right attitude, previous regulatory enforcement experience and a relevant qualification such as trading standards, environmental health or enforcement/Investigative practice qualification level 6 or above, we would look to train and develop you in the role to ensure you learn on the job and become fully qualified within 2 years. You would need to fully commit to this training in these circumstances which would be mainly through online activity. The Team is located at The Calibration Test Centre in Hull on the boundary with the East Riding of Yorkshire. Our Trading Standards Service aims to build a safe, fair, and legal marketplace for East Riding of Yorkshire, helping businesses succeed and safeguarding communities. The team is part of a larger group of regulatory services within the Public Protection Group and you will have the opportunity to work alongside these services as well as work as an officer across both teams in the Trading Standards Service although initially you would be based in the Fair Trading and Business Intelligence Team. The role will involve working in the area of product safety, seizure of illicit products such as cigarettes and vapes, processing the seized items to conclusion, sale of age restricted goods, and dealing with consumer complaints. You will be joining a busy, friendly team and you should be a team player as well as work on your own, providing a customer focused responsive risk based professional service. You will need to be adaptable, creative, and have experience and understanding of working previously in a front line regulatory service. You will need to be able to quickly assimilate information, consider the issues, risks and legal implications and identify appropriate courses of action. Any training in carrying out PACE interviews or conducting investigations would be an advantage. An ability to organise/prioritise your work, co-ordinate a variety of tasks in a clear and logical way and meet agreed deadlines is essential. You should be self-motivated, with good presentation skills and be a strong communicator with both oral and written skills. You will need a calm, positive 'can do' attitude with an enthusiastic approach to carrying out tasks and working with local business and with our residents. A good sense of humour helps with coping with challenging situations. You should have a car available for business purposes and will be expected to visit locations across the East Riding of Yorkshire in this role. The Council supports flexible working and the Team works in a blended way which includes being office based at Hull on certain team days as well as working from home carrying out site visits as required to deliver the service. Days of work can be agreed and the preference would be for 3 full working days during the week, rather than 5 half days, but happy to discuss any flexibiity in this issue. There is an occasional need for work on an evening and weekends with time off in lieu given. The appointed officer will work across all functions of the service
