I have been assigned by an NHS Trust in the UK to help them recruit a Consultant in Stroke Medicine on either a Substantive or an NHS Fixed Term basis for 12 months.
Our client provides the following stroke services:
1. Hyper-acute and acute stroke services with agreed pathway and protocols
2. 24/7 stroke Thrombolysis supported by the AGWS stroke network
3. Stroke thrombectomy service is provided from Southmead Hospital in Bristol. The service runs from 8am to 7pm Monday to Friday. The current Yeovil thrombectomy rate is 3%.
4. Dedicated TIA clinics
5. Daily outpatient clinics
6. Stroke rehabilitation unit at South Petherton Community Hospital and Early Supported Discharge
7. Stroke Research
There are 4 HASU beds in the combined acute cardiac and stroke care unit. A further 12 bed acute stroke unit is based on ward 8B, providing acute and short term assessment of all stroke patients. The unit is supported by a Nurse Stroke consultant and a further 3 dedicated stroke Clinical Nurse Specialists. Rapid access TIA clinic has been running since 2004 providing rapid assessment with agreed protocols for brain imaging (MRI) and carotid imaging. Responsibility for care on the Stroke ward at YDH is shared between the 2 wte Stroke Consultants. They are supported by 2 F1, 2 F2 doctors, 2 Specialist Registrars and a Trust Doctor. There are weekly multidisciplinary team meetings. Our client's current SSNAP rating is C and our thrombolysis rate is the highest in the southwest at 24%. Thrombolysis is provided 24/7 at Yeovil District Hospital according to AGWS stroke network protocols. The service is delivered by the Emergency team, the Stroke team and the on call Medical Registrars, supported by the AGWS stroke network. There are agreed protocols in place, including a pre-alert system.
The appointee will be asked to undertake various duties, which will include:
1. Provide, to a high standard, the full range of specialist diagnosis, treatment and care to patients requiring Stroke services.
2. Work with stroke colleagues to support the development of in house, county wide and community stroke services.
3. Work with stroke physician colleagues to provide consultant-led thrombolysis assessment and delivery.
4. Conduct daily hyper-acute stroke unit ward rounds and daily acute unit ward rounds (Monday-Friday).
5. Provide rapid access TIA clinics in line with national recommendations.
6. Provide physician cover for the stroke rehabilitation units and Early Supported Discharge service and specialist stroke follow up clinics.
7. Supervise the education of doctors in training and participate in teaching and training junior doctors.
8. Actively participate in audit and initiate and supervise audit projects related to their particular sub-specialty interest.
