The Opportunity:
Leonardo has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Thermal Engineer whose primary role will be Thermal Assessment and Analysis in the development and production of Electronic Warfare (EW) products, new and legacy, at the Luton Site.
The candidate will be responsible for evaluating thermal solutions, conducting Thermal Analysis, communicating the results and advising on all aspects of Thermal engineering activities to the various Integrated Project Teams (IPT).
The role inherently requires a strong aptitude for problem solving and managing multiple system interdependencies across a number of Leonardo business groups.
What you will do:
1. Analyse and assess mechanical designs for thermal performance and safety against regulatory and customer requirements using thermal analysis software, CFD techniques and classical hand calculations.
2. Provide guidance on thermal/cooling strategies and advise on thermal design improvements where necessary.
3. Support the selection of manufacturing technologies and materials based on a sound understanding of the mechanical engineering and performance of the product.
4. Support in the creation of thermal requirements and the means to confirm compliance for Leonardo products.
5. Drive change and development in new technologies and methodologies with respect to thermal performance.
6. Support the thermal aspects of product development through design, test and certification.
7. Deliver thermal solutions against requirements within budget and timescales.
8. Create material in support of peer, stage and gate reviews.
9. Support visits and meetings at other Leonardo sites, suppliers and customers when required.
What we are looking for:
1. The candidate should have a degree in Mechanical or Aeronautical Engineering with post-graduate experience in Thermal engineering.
2. Professional recognition as an Incorporated or Chartered Engineer or proven associated competencies is desirable.
3. It is advantageous for the candidate to have experience in the design, development and test of electronics packaging and/or aerospace equipment.
4. A proven knowledge of Thermal analysis and previous experience in developing equipment for extreme operating environments is essential.
5. The candidate will be competent in the use of CFD packages preferably Ansys Icepak and Ansys Fluent along with a proven knowledge of hand calculations.
6. Experience of environmental testing methods for design verification is desirable with knowledge of Mil-Std-810 and RTCA DO-160.
7. Knowledge of Regulatory Standards including but not limited to Def Stan 00-970, Health and Safety HSE Regulations including Hazardous Waste Regulation. Compliance with Pressure Equipment Regulation, Pressure System Safety Regulation and Fluorinated Gas Regulations.
8. Verbal and written communication skills are essential in this role as there will be a high level of interface with both internal and external customers.
9. Knowledge of the requirements for equipment inspection for safety compliance including generation of fault/failure reports.
