Job Function: National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) operates electricity distribution systems for the Midlands, the Southwest of England, and South Wales, serving communities of over 8 million people.
We are looking for apprentices to join us in Network Services, which maintains a 24/7 service from faults and maintenance to new connections, working with underground cables, overhead lines, and substations operating between 230 and 132,000 volts.
About the Role
The Planning & Design Trainee role involves technical discussions with customers, architects, public authorities, and landowners, requiring a sound understanding of engineering and financial matters. The training programme lasts approximately two years, providing on-the-job training and formal courses at our Training Centres in Taunton or Tipton. Candidates will also study for a higher-level qualification and may need to travel for placements across the National Grid service area.
Responsibilities include the design, costing, and quoting of projects such as new electricity supplies and the replacement, diversion, and reinforcement of existing electricity network assets.
The apprenticeship takes around three years to complete, with the first 10-12 weeks dedicated to induction. You will earn while you learn and develop skills to become a Network Planner.

Minimum qualifications required:
* GCSE in English AND Maths (Grade A*-C/9-4)
* ALevels at grade A*-C, one of which must be Maths, Engineering, Electronics, or Physics OR a level 3 or above qualification in an Engineering subject with Electrical or Electronic modules.
If offered a position, a basic DBS check will be required. Evidence of qualifications must be submitted with your application.
Start date: September 2025. No annual leave is permitted during the first 12 weeks of training.
Operationally, you must live within approximately 30 minutes of the depot.
