Come work in a brand new, state-of-the-art and spacious 19,300 sq. foot facility that provides greater efficiency to employees for completing their work by providing adequate space for toolboxes and mobile computer technology at their workspaces.
If you’re seeking variety in your work, you will not be disappointed as the fleet maintenance team maintains and repairs nearly 425 city vehicles (including police and fire vehicles) and more than 250 small engines (weed-eaters, mowers and chainsaws). We will provide training to expand your knowledge and help prepare you for ASE certifications and CDL licensing if needed. We operate a body and paint shop for city vehicles and perform towing and recovery services, welding and fabrication.
This position also receives the following:
* Uniforms are provided
* Tool allowance - $1200 annually ($600 in June and $600 in December)
* Boot allowance - $170 annually
* Personal protective equipment - City issued
* Training to work towards ASE certifications and CDL Licensing, if needed
* Training on unfamiliar pieces of equipment and vehicles to increase knowledge base and work experience
Position Summary
Under the general supervision of the Fleet Supervisor, this entry-level position performs semi-skilled and skilled work in the repair and maintenance of the equipment and vehicles in the City's fleet. Duties include repair and maintenance of small engines to heavy equipment, such as trailers, spreaders and plows.
Essential Functions, Duties and Responsibilities
* Performs semi-skilled work in major and minor repairs and preventative maintenance to cars, trucks and construction equipment, which includes wheel alignment, engine and carburetor overhaul, fuel injection system repairs, transmission (auto and standard), clutch replacement, all drive-line repairs, tire repair (including split rim, flats, spin balancing--conventional (on the vehicle or off the vehicle), operation of electronic diagnostic test equipment, welding (gas and electric), fabricating, wiring and mobile hydraulic systems installation and repair. Work will be performed on both gas and diesel engines.
* Completes all work orders documenting the actual condition of the vehicle, all repairs completed, materials used and time spent.
* Operates the tow truck and is able to make necessary repairs in the field.
* Subject to call back for snow and other emergencies in accordance with department policy.
Qualifications
Minimum: High school diploma or G.E.D. and two years of mechanical repair and equipment maintenance experience; or Associate degree (or equivalent), completion of related technical trade school program and one year of mechanical repair and equipment maintenance. Must obtain EPA Vehicle Air Conditioning Certification and complete Mechanic Basic Skills Inventory within one year of hire. Must possess a valid Class A commercial driver's license (CDL) (with endorsements for Tanker and Air Brakes) or obtain within 180 days of hire. Must complete required NIMS training within one year of hire. Required to supply basic hand tools necessary to perform duties effectively.
Desired: ASE Certification in Preventative Maintenance Inspection and ASE Certification in at least four automotive and/or medium/heavy-duty truck-related areas.
Compensation and Benefits
Hourly rate of pay is $24.64 to $28.56 dependent on qualifications and directly related experience. This position will have the opportunity to earn additional pay of $2.00 per hour on top of the base hourly rate of pay during the winter months. This is a full-time, hourly non-exempt position.
