Vacancy for Assistant Archives Officer (Digital) at Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums
21 August 2022
Newcastle upon Tyne
Fixed Term
We are advertising a full-time, 1-year contract for an Assistant Archives Officer (Digital). The successful candidate will have excellent knowledge of digital preservation to work with us on the increasing volume of born-digital records we hold. Ideally, with experience in working with digital preservation software in an archive environment, the successful candidate will have demonstrable knowledge of digital records management best practices and challenges.
While there may be some opportunity to develop content for digital engagement, the focus of the role is on the preservation, rather than creation, of digital material.
Key Tasks:
1. Working closely with the Archives Lead to support the development of strategies and processes for digital preservation.
2. Creating a digital asset register.
3. Identifying realistic technical solutions to digital preservation challenges.
4. Working with the Archives Officer to identify and transfer born-digital records to the Archives.
Tyne & Wear Archives is an accredited joint service for the five Tyne and Wear councils and is based in Discovery Museum, Newcastle, one of the largest free museums in the north of England. Our collections are a typical mix of public authority and private material, but with particular strength in industrial heritage. We are a recognised ‘Place of Deposit’ for public records, and our shipbuilding collections are designated as of national and international significance. As more records are created in a digital-only format, we need to put in place systems and processes that allow us to transfer them to the Archives and manage them effectively to ensure they remain accessible for future generations.
