Location: Office Base is London Broadcasting House. This is a hybrid role and the successful candidate will balance office working with home working.

Job Introduction
This role is specifically for a digital journalist with skills in data and visual journalism and with great communication and coaching skills, to join the World Service Visual Journalism team.
The successful candidate will be working hands-on with journalists, developers and designers from across the World Service Languages regions and the wider Visual Journalism and Digital Formats teams in BBC News, producing some of the most innovative content for world service language audiences.
Using specialist tools and combining those with an understanding of journalistic rigour, the team aims to find original stories and to produce powerful visual explanations that improve understanding of the news and captivate audiences.
The role also entails working closely with journalists, planning editors and audience engagement teams across the WS Languages online portfolio to make the most of the content produced, encourage editorial best practice and the correct use of data and visual journalism tools.
Main Responsibilities
* To enhance and explain major news stories. To research, write, co-ordinate, manage and deliver to tight deadlines the production of high quality digital content including: infographics, maps, data visualisations, multimedia explainers, using data and visual journalism specialist skills.
* To work closely with design and development colleagues, as well as with journalists from across the BBC World Service Languages Regions, particularly their Visual Journalism Hubs, and BBC News in general.
* To originate and develop content in a multiplatform way.
* To suggest ideas for enhancing breaking, daily, medium and long term stories.
* To be aware of web innovations and how they can enhance the team’s output.
* Explore, test, implement new frameworks and tools, promoting formats and services that are competitive and meet BBC audiences’ needs.
* Support stakeholders to make the most of the available tools, to improve commissioning and workflows.
* Deputise for senior staff, as and when required.
* To represent the Visual Journalism World Service Languages team at editorial meetings.
Are you the right candidate?
* Excellent visual journalism awareness skills, good data processing skills (like sorting and organising data using spreadsheets and similar tools).
* Significant experience of online news journalism; ability to think creatively and imaginatively about news coverage and use audience analytics to improve output.
* Experience of coordinating work with World Service Languages and understanding of their specific digital requirements, plus the ability to empathise with the needs of WS Languages’ teams.
* Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and experience in liaising with multidisciplinary teams.
* Experience of delivering small projects and deploying resources in the most effective and efficient way, with high attention to detail.
* Experience of using Content Management System tools used by WS Languages (Optimo/IDT).
* Experience with graphics design software like Photoshop is desirable, as is knowledge of data visualisation and mapping tools such as Flourish, Tableau, Refine, QGIS or Mapshaper.
