About the Team
The research team is expanding to keep pace with Ocado’s growth. We are responding to a new hunger in the business to understand our customers better, so we can succeed in our purpose to deliver more of what matters to them. Together, the research team works to create a real sense of who our customers are and bring them to life for the rest of the Insight and Marketing teams, as well as across the wider business. We are a small team, working closely with Customer Insight colleagues.
The Role/Profile
1. This is an ideal role for someone with a strong grounding in research (4+ years) gained within an in-house insights team or a consumer research agency. As a Senior Research Executive, you will play a key part in influencing at a strategic level a complex group of stakeholders across the business. We are therefore looking for someone who can analyse research and data output and turn this into actionable insights and recommendations.
As a Senior Research Executive, you will be responsible for setting up, managing and executing some of the projects the team owns. You will be one of the biggest advocates of the customer voice in the wider business. You will work with every part of the organisation, in addition to closely working with the Insight and Marketing teams. You will have autonomy to own and run projects.
The role includes the opportunity to line manage a research executive direct report.
Examples of recent projects include:
2. Customer basket segmentation : this large scale in-house project involved designing, executing and reporting on customer qualitative and quantitative surveys. We worked closely with Data Science and Customer Insight colleagues to integrate data, insight and research to come up with a rich segmentation. The final part of the project has been rolling the segments out to the business and ensuring they are as effective and useful as possible
3. Quantitative survey of infrequent customers : we had identified a group of customers who order from us infrequently. Senior stakeholders wanted to understand the motivations behind this behaviour. We designed a questionnaire and surveyed over 1,000 customers, analysing, reporting and making recommendations in time to deliver results for a Board strategy day
4. Creative campaign evaluation : working with Brand Marketing on a project to understand consumer reactions to a planned creative campaign and propose changes based on their feedback
Key Responsibilities
5. Ensure that the most effective qualitative and quantitative research solutions are applied to answer stakeholders’ questions
6. Take ownership from proposal writing and research design through to analysis, distillation and knowledge sharing
7. Line manage junior team member
8. Present insights and research recommendations to stakeholders in an engaging, straightforward and concise manner
9. Manage timelines, and flag areas for improved efficiencies within the research programme
10. Select ad hoc agencies and work collaboratively with them to ensure timely delivery and great outputs
11. Become an expert in the self-service tools available within the Research team
12. Demonstrate and inspire industry best practice, driving organisational understanding of research techniques at Ocado and champion the research function in the business
Key skills
13. In-depth knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies
14. First hand experience designing, recruiting, sampling and analysing research
15. Experience with customer satisfaction and brand tracking surveys
16. Numerate and analytical thinking
17. Commercial awareness and problem solving ability
18. Good knowledge of Google Slides and Sheets (or PowerPoint and Excel) and experience creating engaging visualisations and outputs
19. Ability to work in a hypothesis-led way to break down problems and generate recommendations based on survey findings
20. Strong project management skills, the ability to manage multiple workstreams simultaneously and to prioritise own workload
21. A proactive and enthusiastic approach to conveying customer and consumer insights
