The Modern Languages Department is well established within the School and consists of 7 members of staff, 5 of whom are native speakers.
Lewes Old Grammar School is unusual in that all pupils in Year 7 are taught French, German and Spanish. As pupils progress through the school, about half of pupils continue with all three languages in Y8 and Y9 and the other half concentrates on two in any combination. At GCSE a small number of pupils opt to study all three languages with some opting for two and a large number studying one. Our results are consistently very good. The students follow the International EDEXCEL syllabus at GCSE and the EDEXCEL syllabus at A level. In the past the majority of our A Level students have chosen to continue to study the language at university, sometimes as a single subject and sometimes with joint honours.
The Department has six teaching rooms and is well resourced; with interactive screens or white boards, projectors and digital technology to record/practice speaking. The Department subscribes to Activelearn, Languagenut and other language sites.
The Department has the strong belief that all the pupils should be taught not only the language but the culture surrounding it; therefore, the successful candidate must also have an excellent knowledge of all aspects of French culture. Trips and exchanges are organised regularly and are seen as an integral part of language learning.
The successful candidate must be able to teach French confidently to A level, be passionate about languages and have the ability to motivate students; being determined to help them achieve their absolute best. They must have excellent inter- personal skills and be able to produce innovative and good quality resources, as well as willing to take an active part in extracurricular activities and lunchtime clubs. This role will be offered on a permanent basis with a probation period of one academic year.
If you feel you have the qualities, we are looking for we would like to hear from you.
