Job Purpose
Bargain Hunt, BBC One’s popular daytime antiques series, is looking for two researchers to join the team. Broadcast almost every day of the year, Bargain Hunt has been one of the nation’s favourite shows for 25 years and regularly attracts up to two million viewers. Working from Cardiff, the production team makes 96 new episodes each year, filming with presenters, experts and contributors at antiques fairs and auctions across the UK.
The successful candidates must be comfortable working both independently and as part of a large, busy team. You will have the opportunity to suggest and develop creative filming treatments using a wide range of sources, reference materials and archive. Confident and good at communicating, you will liaise with contributors, experts and talent.
Working closely with the director and other members of the production team, you will help produce engaging content by performing a wide variety of tasks. Responsibilities will include coming up with creative ideas and finding suitable contributors and locations for short VTs; sourcing and clearing a wide range of archive material for worldwide distribution; communicating effectively with people from all walks of life and setting up and maintaining information systems. You will work within a close knit team to produce output that complies with the BBC Health and Safety policy and Editorial standards.
A passion for antiques and history is highly desirable and the successful candidates must have at least a year’s experience of working as a Researcher in Factual Entertainment TV production. You will have a strong track record of finding original stories for broadcast, clearing archive, experience of meeting tight deadlines and of working alongside directors, contributors and talent on busy location shoots. You will have excellent planning and organisational skills and the resilience and stamina to thrive when working under pressure.
The role is based in Roath Lock, Cardiff. Researchers will typically work for three days a week in the office, with some flexibility (i.e. hybrid working). The successful candidates will regularly go on location for filming and must be prepared to be away for up to three nights at a time. In general, normal office hours will apply. However, the nature of the role means that a flexible approach to working hours is necessary.
BBC Studios is committed to having a diverse range of skills, experience and talent working on our programmes, and as such we’re keen for applicants from underrepresented groups to apply, particularly those who are neurodivergent, have a disability, are from an ethnic minorities background and lower socio-economic groups to ensure we are representative of all.
