Scientific Assistant: Conservation Physiology and Reproduction

The Role
We now have an exciting vacancy for a Scientific Assistant to join our Science Department and work within our Conservation Physiology and Reproduction Research Programme, focusing on wildlife reproduction, health, and well-being.
The Scientific Assistant will support the Science Department to ensure Chester Zoo maintains the highest external reputation and credibility as a world leader in scientific innovation and research excellence. They will contribute to specific programme projects, effectively translating scientific outputs to maximize conservation impact and achieve Chester Zoo’s conservation strategies and mission.
The Scientific Assistant will be based within our International Centre for Zoo Science, working primarily in our Wildlife Endocrinology Laboratory. Responsibilities include:
1. Organising sample shipments
2. Catalouging and processing samples
3. Running assays
4. Preparing buffers and reagents
5. Washing dishes
6. Stock control
7. Maintaining freezer sample database
8. Maintaining laboratory cleanliness
9. Keeping accurate records
10. Ensuring quality control
We’re looking for someone who can:
• Contribute to the Conservation Physiology and Reproduction research programme using technically robust scientific methods
• Effectively prioritise their own time
• Work collaboratively across multiple departments to achieve common goals
• Contribute to relevant lectures and workshops
• Disseminate work to a wide variety of audiences, including peer-reviewed publications

The Package
• Fixed-term, 12-month contract
• 24 hours per week (worked over 3 days, Monday to Friday)
• Salary of £16,181.90 per annum (pro-rata) to include pay award active from January 2025

Our Requirements
• Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent experience in a relevant field
• Evidence of laboratory experience; experience with sample preparation and enzyme immunoassays is particularly desirable
• Demonstrated ability to deliver research projects on time and to a high standard
• Ability to present information clearly in verbal and written communications, including scientific writing
• Ability to maintain partnerships and collaborations for project delivery
• Proven ability to work effectively in a team environment
• Knowledge of zoos and their conservation functions
Desirable:
• Evidence of effective training
• Experience with data analysis and statistical packages relevant to the field
