Principal Safety Engineer Location: New Malden - Minimum of 3 days a week onsit e Clearance : Applicants must currently hold SC security clearance. Overview As a Principal Safety Engineer, you will take the lead in safety assurance for the design, development, and upkeep of advanced infrastructure within naval vessel Platform Management Systems, covering both surface ships and submarines. Your role will be pivotal in overseeing safety processes related to product development and providing essential support for mission-critical naval operations. Reporting to the Product Safety Manager, you will serve as a key figure within the Safety Engineering team. Responsibilities : Develop safety activities and schedules to meet project milestones and safety requirements. Lead safety efforts to ensure system design meets customer and derived safety targets across hardware, software, and firmware. Conduct safety audits during design reviews and committee meetings. Ensure high-quality technical documentation aligns with company and customer standards. Guide engineering teams with impactful safety analyses and design recommendations. Present clear, well-reasoned safety arguments to influence stakeholder decisions. Stay updated on industry standards and best practices to drive improvements. Contribute to staff meetings, team briefings, and reports. Supervise, mentor, and support junior employees as needed. Experience: Relevant work experience in a safety-related engineering environment Understanding and awareness of international and defence standards such as IEC 61508 and Def Stan 00-056 (Essential experience) Experience of safety assurance of COTS PE based systems and/or high integrity software Ability to understand hardware and software failure modes, causes and effects Experience in safety/reliability analysis techniques: hazard identification and analysis, FMECA, FTA, Functional Failure Analysis Experience of the tools and techniques used in developing ALARP justifications Master’s degree, Degree, HND or HNC in Engineering or Safety Management related discipline To apply, please either do so direct or send your CV to lewis.thompsonsearchability.com
