Vulnerable children in the UK need your help
Wherever you work in the Action for Children family, you'll be helping to change the lives of the most vulnerable children in the UK.
Last year, we helped more than 687,000 children and families across the UK. From direct work in communities to national campaigning, we are focused on making sure every child has a safe and happy childhood, and the foundations they need to thrive.
Why Action for Children?
Working here is more than a job. Everyone in the Action for Children family is passionate about protecting and supporting children. It's the sense of purpose that drives us every single day. Because we know that, when we work together, we can make a huge difference to bring lasting improvements to vulnerable children's lives.
A bit about the role
At our Silverton Short Breaks service in Hamilton, we offer short breaks to children and young people with disabilities.
We work to reduce the impact of the disability on the child's day to day life by providing support for them to participate, make choices, enjoy new experiences, make friendships and be part of their local community. At the same time parents and carers can have a much-needed break knowing their child is in a safe fun and enriching environment.
We are looking for someone who will plan and prepare the evening meals for approximately 5 young people who are in the service on each given night along with the staff supporting them. This will involve encouraging positive and healthy choices, ordering and stock control of the food and meal planning to an agreed budget. Most food will be cooked from fresh, and you will be responsible for preparing, cooking and washing up. We are a homely house and looking for someone who can prepare 'family meals, serve and then clear up. Preparing food for the days you don't work will also be involved, which helps over the weekend.
You'll require a working knowledge of allergies and special dietary requirements. Food Hygiene certificate is desirable but not essential. Maintaining records to comply with food Hygiene standards is also part of the role.
How you'll help to create brighter futures
-Allowing young people to try new foods,
- Maintaining a healthy balanced diet for the children.
- Preparing homemade fresh food for the children.
Homemaker
The role of homemaker will also involve cleaning on certain days - hoovering/brushing and mopping the floors/dusting etc. There will also be a deep cleaning rota linking in with our existing cleaner. All cleaning will be following COSHH regulations.
Let's talk about you
Are you resilient and have a positive approach to change and challenge? We are looking for someone with a 'can do' attitude to join our team. Ideally you will have:
- Experience of working in a kitchen.
- Food Hygiene or allergy awareness certificate.
- Good communication skills.
- Ability to multi task.
- Be able to cook from a menu and support in menu creation.

Male staff are under-represented within our Children Service roles. We would like to encourage more male applicants for our Children Service roles.
