Job Description:
NNL is where your understanding of reactors fuels the nation. As part of our Fuel Reactor & Reprocessing capability, you’ll play a vital role in developing the UK fuel cycle in line with advances in new technology and new processes. As old reactors reach the end of their lifespan, we need experts like you, with the technical skills to virtually model scenarios that enable us to explore new ways of managing the inputs and outputs of reactors, paving the way for the implementation of smaller, cleaner revolutionary new reactors. A secondment opportunity for an experienced Technical Lead has arisen within the Fuel Performance and Storage team. The secondment will span two years and will offer the opportunity to make a direct contribution to sustainable nuclear power generation, supporting the UK’s objective for clean and secure energy production.
The Fuel Performance and Storage team is concerned with understanding the properties and behaviour of nuclear fuel and supports a number of large, long-term projects on behalf of several of NNL’s major customers, including SL, NWS, NDA, and EDF. The team applies and coordinates expertise in the physical, chemical, nuclear, and metallurgical properties of fuel to ensure safe and efficient irradiation, handling, and disposal.
This two-year secondment offers the opportunity to take on a technical lead role in some of our ongoing projects; the successful applicant will take technical leadership over the following technical area:
* The storage of fuels at Sellafield including development and implementation of drying and active corrosion rigs, developing the technical basis for long-term storage of AGR fuel at Sellafield, and identifying R+D requirements for supporting pond storage.
Main Responsibilities:
* Accountable for the technical delivery of specific PIE techniques, making best use of technologies and responding to evolving Customer demands.
* Accountable for performing technical lead reviews and approvals of selected reports generated within the Fuel Performance and Storage area, ensuring that appropriate challenge is provided and that the relevant procedures and assurance activities are followed.
* Responsible for ensuring that the quality assurance arrangements in place are sufficient to assure the quality of results.
* Ensuring adequate technical supervision of work is provided within the area.
* Ensuring the technical content and quality of deliverables meet the Customer’s expectations (where the Customer may be internal or external to NNL).
* Ensuring that processes applied are consistent with the requirements of IMS and NNL wide requirements.
* Supporting the development of early career team members through mentoring activities.
* Supporting the Project Manager in reviews of the project in order to identify lessons learnt, be proactive and make suggestions for improvement.
* Supporting the Project Manager in planning/scoping of work and proposal preparation.
* Interfacing with customer technical representatives.
* Identifying and promoting innovation/ internal search and development activities in support of this technical area.
* Supporting the wider technical standards within NNL by participating in wider learning initiatives.
Essential Criteria:
* Degree or higher qualification in a science or engineering related discipline.
* Experience as a technical lead within a technical environment.
* Able to deliver compelling justification to underpin a technical strategy, scope and delivery against Customer’s expectations.
* Experience in the provision of technical supervision.
* Excellent data-taking/analysis skills, aptitude for experimental work.
* Excellent communication and team working skills.
* Experience in writing and reviewing technical literature to a high standard.
* Ability to collaborate with other technical specialists within the business/ supply chain.
* Proven ability to conform to appropriate safe systems of work.
* Demonstrated positive attitude to safety, security and other EHSS&Q requirements.
* Ability to obtain SC level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment, financial and criminal record checks plus 5 years’ worth of UK residency).
Desirable Criteria:
* Prior experience with techniques used for examining irradiated fuel – or comparable inspection techniques used elsewhere.
* A good awareness of characteristics of irradiated fuel and/or significant interest in developing this understanding further based on demonstrated aptitude.
* An appreciation of context- fuel cycles and sustainability.
* Chartered membership status of relevant professional institution.
