Histopathology Specialist (Band 6)/Registered Biomedical Scientist (Band 5)
Applications are invited from suitably qualified, competent and versatile individuals to join our progressive, dedicated, busy, friendly team and department.
As a Specialist Biomedical Scientist, you must be HCPC registered with a BSc in Biomedical Sciences (or equivalent) preferably with at least 5 years post registration experience in Histology. In addition, candidates must have completed the IBMS Specialist Portfolio. This must clearly be indicated on your application form.
Heavy consideration will also be given to candidates who are Registered Biomedical Scientists with at least 5 years Histology laboratory experience (pre or post registration). These candidates will be expected to complete their specialist portfolio within a 3 year period (from employment).
In addition, candidates who are in the process of completing their specialist portfolio will be supported through to completion within a 2 year period (from employment).
Main duties of the job
To perform the laboratory duties required in the analysis of histological and diagnostic cytology clinical specimens, ensuring effective patient diagnosis, monitoring and treatment. The post holder will fulfil the departmental KPI's and departmental objectives to deliver a high-quality analytical and interpretive laboratory service.
The post holder will work as part of a large team, providing support to our scientific and clinical teams within the department. The post holder will rotate through all sections of our Histology laboratory and undertake data extraction and manipulation, specimen dissection, handling and processing, microtomy, routine and specialist staining, renal biopsy processing and frozen section preparation. Candidates are expected to have excellent lab practice and skills.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
We are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic HCPC registered Specialist or Registered Biomedical Scientist to join our team based in the Histology Department at the Royal Stoke University Hospital, Stoke-On-Trent.
You must be a strong team player and leader, who has a positive attitude to change and service evolution, with excellent laboratory, organisational and communication skills.
Please note the post holder will be required to participate in a shift rota with a 7 day working pattern following a month period of training.
Person specification
Knowledge, Training and Education
* Registered Histology Biomedical Scientist with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC).
* BSc (Hons) Biomedical degree or equivalent.
* Advanced working knowledge of Histopathology techniques and practices.
* Competence in basic tissue transfer and/or dissection.
Experience
* For Specialist BMS's, at least 5 years post registration Histology laboratory experience OR for Registered BMSs, at least 5 years pre or post registration Histology laboratory experience.
* Working in an acute NHS Trust.
* Working in a busy laboratory environment.
* Working with, maintaining and troubleshooting complex and specialist laboratory equipment.
Skills and ability
* Understands the importance of data integrity and confidentiality.
* Intermediate and accurate IT skills.
* Excellent manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination skills for accuracy and fine adjustment of equipment.
* Good oral and written communication skills.
* Work with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and contribute to their review and implementation.
* Work under pressure, prioritise workload and meet deadlines.
* Troubleshooting and problem solving.
Personal Qualities
* Must participate in the required rota’s for the department.
* Prepared to work flexibly, including participating in out of routine hours service arrangements when required.
