Job Description
We are currently partnered with an incredibly exciting progressive structural engineering consultancy with a start-up feel based around Shoreditch, London as they look to add a talented Structural Engineer to their team.\n\nOrganic growth means they are looking to actively add to their already impressive team with projections for a prolonged period of sustained growth. This is a great time to join the existing team on a journey towards an even brighter future.\n\nThe consultancy is driven by sustainability in all areas of their work. They are acutely aware that they have a unique opportunity to shape the world in which we live.
\n\nThey take great joy in helping to inform the materials and design of their buildings and considering the impact. They take great joy in helping to inform the materials and design of our buildings and considering the effect on the end user. For instance, using attractive natural materials like exposed timber can offer comfort and reassurance.\n\n \n\nTheir experts deeply understand the impact of their engineering on a building's 'feel' and aesthetic.
They also think carefully about a building's energy requirements - including energy embodied within the building materials.\n\n \n\nWhere possible, the consultancy encourages reusing the existing building fabric. Where this isn't feasible, they'll look to repurpose the construction materials elsewhere. When they need to build new, we rigorously review the construction typology - giving its embodied energy equal standing to structural performance, constructability and aesthetics.\n\nThey also recognise that manufacturing buildings off-site in modern, purpose-built factories will improve quality and reduce air leakage and operational energy.
Fewer operatives on-site also enables timely and efficient construction.\n\nSome of their recent projects include two 18th century ruins in Somerset which have been given a new life as contemporary luxury holiday homes using contemporary offsite construction techniques and a near-Passivhaus level of airtightness. The ruins of the limestone walls were rebuilt with lime mortar and restrained against the panelised timber structure - which was manufactured offsite and installed in a two-week period. As well as reducing the construction programme, the offsite- system vastly improved the air tightness of the fabric and provided a suitable fixing substrate for the charred timber cladding; which housed within it discrete pockets for a 'bat box' maintaining a home for the local ecology.\n\nThis is a unique opportunity that is not to be missed.
